Does anyone in the Pro-Audio industry sail?

This is not your typical sailors question, but curiosity is making me ask. I work in the professional audio equipment manufacturing industry and to date, have only known one other person from my industry that is a boater. Could be that I know too many workaholics, and we all know how much time boating takes.

So, if you come from my industry and your a boater, it would be good to know that there are others from the audio world that partake in the boating world. What's your story?

I am an inventor. I don't know anyone else that is an inventor that boats. They probably made more money than me and threw their laptop overboard and sailed away.
I think it is interesting to know what people do. I often volunter what I do in hopes that others will respond in kind, just because I am curious. Two things I am trying to figure out for the flesh is money and women. I gave up on understanding women, money seems just as difficult at times.

Yes - I'm one

I'm with a very large systems integrator in New England. We regularly work with Biamp AudiaFlex and Nexia, QSC amps (with DSP) and will be using their new MediaMatrix knock-off (I'm sure you heard the story), not so much Raine any more. We have a lot of "bread and butter" installs but we do a lot of really big ones too. It's a mix of mostly commercial and collage, with some larger (and fun) sound and performance jobs. Our own design/build as well as consultant spec work.
Quite a resume you have there.
My story is the field as you know is a very fast paced, hi stress and a no regular hours type of deal. Sailing for me is a great relaxing escape from the show biz although relegated to mostly weekends. Also I'm a musician who performed semi pro for a lot of years and now need the peace and quiet.

I work in law enforcement. There are a few of us around but I have a feeling that most in LE would rather be in the go-fast boat because of the lifestyle that many live.

Then again, I am extremely different from a lot of my co-workers.

I design audio and video products... also mix in WiFi, Telco, Networking, etc... Have done audio designs for 30+ years. Been fun - been changes.... Still like tubes... Like Electrostatic speakers (Quads rule....!!) Been to NAB a lot...

Traditionally, it has been said that the most useless thing that one can do is to stick their finger in the water and quickly pull it out to see the hole that is left...

Boats are kind of like that hole in the water that we throw money in... but not so useless..

Designing really good "State of the Art" audio equipment is like that hole in the water.. It's not SOA in a couple of years - and in 10 years - few remember... Still, I have always like designing....

I am a video editor, writer, producter, director. With the new more powerful laptops and a portable raid, I can work on the boat if I wish. I am a bit obsessive so I mostly work in studio or at home 24/7 if on deadline. I do however always have my laptop with me so I can work during down times or if an idea comes along.

Jerry "D video HD", with all your boats and different places you live, I thought you were in the design business but probably retired. Have you managed to stay in the business but still have somewhat of a retirement lifestyle? That would be a good "retirement" if you have managed to pull it off.

But spent the previous ten years in Radio.

I worked primarily on "bleeding edge" design technologies - mostly video/audio applications - and some other "multi-media" I/O designs..... Customers are where they are..... So I travel... I am not retired - probably won't be... am taking some time to work on my own projects in the first half of the year.... Solar/Wind to AC systems design... This too is related to audio/video products.... (them pesky electrons......)

TV/Radio/Recording engineer

I'm a tv/radio soundman/engineer for a PBS/NPR combo station. Getting time off to work on the boa or sail is a big problem, as my hours are determined by shoots, TV studio productions, music recording for radio and TV, and of course, begathons. No one understands why I don't want to work 60 hour weeks, especially during sailing season!

I find that people who always work 60 hours a week without any form of recreation are usually bad at their job. I'll be far more productive in 24 hours (after a long boating weekend) than if I skipped the weekend and put in 50 hours.

Unfortunately, too many managers don't get this, since they're the type that require 80 hours of work to do a 15 hour job, LOL.

I used to design machines, tooling and fixturing. I also try to invent stuff (wish I had thought of the 'Topsy Turvey'), grow Orchids, propagate Genseriads and do photography. Company cut back 120 people in March. No jobs around here... "Do you want Paper or Plastic?"...
