Several people have been debating about buying dodgers.
Don't forget that they are listed for sale by Vega Marin AB in
Sweden. Part no. 8100. I do not know the price but for many years
the fabric part was about 700 crowns which would be about $110
canadian or roughly $75 U.S. We bought one in 1985 and it was very
good quality. There used to be several colours.
I had no success reaching Vega Marin by email. Fax was successful
at 011-46-31-2924-49. Anyone interested could fax for a price
quote.

You asked about dodgers. The quote you were given for making one is
away too high. Try the source Steve gave you in England. Or they
are listed in the catalogue of Vega Marin in Sweden. They fit the
original frames but are said to be built higher than original. The
frames themselves are too large to ship. I bought one in 1985 and
used it 13 years with pleasure. The cost at that time, in today's
dollars was $175 Canad. or about $116 U.S. See message no. 2334 on
how to fax Vega Marin.

If you have the original frames, you might consider using them and
adding a grab-bar. I made a "roll-bar" out of a piece of pipe,
attached to the coamings and running up across the rear of dodger,
and it was reassuring to grab. I sent a drawing to the U.S. Vega
newsletter, and think it is in the repair manual.

In 1998 i raised the boom, like you, and had a higher dodger built.
With strong one-inch stainless frame and fancy big dodger with slots
to take lines into cockpit and zip to bimini, cost then was 1,000 or
about $680 U.S.

Who built your dodger in 1998? Although the price is certain to be higher now, it seems probable that it would be competitive with the U.K. price, and the shipping from Canada would be much cheaper and simpler.

Morton L. Caplan, you asked where my dodger was made in 1998.
Checking the phone book, it looks like the outfit is no longer in
business. However their price was not different from other
companies. If you like I could send you a list of local outfits,
maybe to your home email so as not to clutter up the group site.

The problem would be getting the dimensions you wanted, at long
distance. There are Vegas locally that the builder could look at
for shape of boat and standard dodgers, you could specify any special
measurements.

Thanks for the reply. I am trying to either sell my Vega or get it to Nova Scotia. If I succeed at the latter, I will cntact you for the list. Shipping within Canada should be much more reasonable than from the U.K or from Canada to the U.S.

Hi

Make sure that the frames are the same as there are quite a few different
models of sprayhood (dodgers) for the Vega. The series III also has a
different
attachment method so check carefully.

Sorry, don't have the dodgers any more. Apparently threw out the old beat-up one. Sold the newer one to Brian Hofler who is often on this net. Probably he is having the canvas copied, you might be able to borrow or buy our old one. It was in good enough shape hat we were using it until we changed systems.

Sounds like canvas work is expensive in U.S. Alternative if you are sure the frames are original would be to buy one through Steve Birch, or Albin Marin in Sweden (see message 2334 for contacting them). I think Albin price would be about $150-200?.

Yes I am here:

I spoke to another Vega owner (Max I know you are out there) who gave me the
name to a canvas place here in Vancouver. He had his original dodger
recanvassed (Sunbrella) for about $350 Canadian. That is why I asked Steve
for the little plates for attaching the dodger to Lyra. I will be at the
boat this weekend installing the original dodger to ensure that it will work
right. If all goes well I will post to the network the information regarding
cost and who to contact and possibly a template for replacement.

Hi Brian: I'll be interested in your project result. I have the original
frame and a tattered mess that was the original dodger. It was good to see
you at the Rendevous. Hope you had a good trip . Bill Bach V1071 Calimera

Hey Bill:

I was on the dock today and fitted the dodger with the fittings I received
from Steve Birch. It looks great. Thanks to John Sprague too. I do not
intend to have it remade until the spring, perhaps sooner if Diana buys me a
Christmas present. However I will keep the original for a template and share
it among the VEGAtarians. You first Bill. If you have the frame (original is
skinny anodized hardend aluminum) you may want to send it to me and I can
have a new canvas fitted on your frame at the same time that I do mine. I
will cost you half the price because of the US$ advantage.
Great to see you and Helen too. I'm sure well will be seeing each other at
future rendezvous's.
Thanks again to John for his help in Salt Spring. Did you get your boat in
the water John?
Thanks to Judy and Ken for your kind words re my father. Life goes on as you
know. Does everyone know about Mr. Shower. This is something to share with
the VEGA community Judy.
I did not get as many pictures this year but I will upload to the site for
the 2002 rendezvous.

Cheers All
