I'm looking for a source to buy a dodger for my 1982 Mac 25. If anyone has one or where I can have one made, please let me know, thanks, Jerry

Yeah....What he said! :)

I have a V2-24, I would LOVE to find an outlet for the original style pop-top dodger! Even a pattern would work, if that's all I could find...

dodger ideas

I think JohnS made a intresting pop top cover, with screens.... (archives search) I think a pop top enclosuer could be made with eisen glass to get similar effects.. but thats not really a 'dodger'. I'm guessing it would only work with the pop top down, so whats the point... also would like to see an example...

what dodger?

Maybe I am missing something here. I always thought a dodger was like a bimin with a windshield in the front so that one could 'dodge' the wind and spray. Are we looking for something that would attach to the poptop (when closed) and provide a windshield/top arrangement over the cockpit or an original poptop enclosure that covers the raised poptop with windows etc to offer more enclosed headroom? I have an original poptop cover in good shape that could probably be used as a pattern if that's what we are talkng about. If it's to work with the top closed, wouldn't it be possible to have a sailmaker/canvas maker create a windshield that could be attached to a bimini? On that note, has anyone put a bimini on a 25 with the original sheet arrangement? -John

Dodger when the top is up

John, it is for the poptop when it is up. It provides protection and headroom at the same time. Do you use your dodger? Maybe we could pass the pattern on to someone to make us a new one. Is it for a Mac 25? I have access to a canvas maker, so maybe we could make a few and sell them for cost. Everyone makes out. Thanks, Jerry

Pop Top Cover

I made a pop top cover out of canvas with roll up plastic windows over white screen for hot weather sailing/sleeping. It also did very well in a gulley-washer rainstorm one night this summer. See the link for pics, I am trying to find a sheet of paper with the dimensions of the factory pop top cover. However, if you are really talking about a dodger, I was thinking about it for a while, and I came to the conclusion that it is too much complication for too little return. To work around the pop top (that is not going anywhere), the dodger would have so many compromises as to be worthless. The only way it would be of any value would be to permanently attach the pop top in the down position, and then a dodger would be easy. But I like my pop top, so a dodger on a D is for someone else.

As a pattern

Jerry, I haven't used mine yet other than putting it on the boat to see how it goes. I plan on some cruising/overnights next season and will be using it then. If we can't find someone who has a pattern for it I would be willing to loan it out for a pattern if that would help. With the exception of a missing snap button or two (which I need to replace) mine is in really nice shape. I like John S's idea of having screens in place with roll-up windows. I know my cabin gets pretty stuffy from time to time and I don't want to provide meals for marauding mosquitos while I try to sleep. If you have a source that could copy mine and put screens in like John S has I might consider buying a whole new one. I haven't really looked at the possibility or checked out any of the canvas shops here. Maybe one of them could do it as well. I would be willing to bet that a fair number of owners would like to get one, especially if it had the screens. Let me know what I can do to help. -John

That is exactly what I'm looking for! I love the looks of the the canvas cover. It looks like it wouldn't be too bad to make by just covering the top. I thought they were made to just fill in the sides of the pop top but now I have a different view of making dodger(tent) that you have constructed. If you come across those plans, let me know I and would appreciate a copy of them. What did you use to hold the canvas down on the boat? Thanks, Jerry

John has a 26

and the original request was for a 25. The pop-top on the 25 doesn't attach to the mast, so check the pattern carefully for your application.

Plan Application

True, the plans are for a 26D, just alter the lengths to match. I made most dimensions a little bigger to make up for the shrinkage of the original top. John S
