We recently purchased a 460 and have not yet found a dodger design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing for this model. Would anyone tell me about their ideas?

Dodgers on 460's

This is always a tough decision with a new (or new-to-you) boat. they always seem to look best with clean decks but the reality is that the dodger is a necessity in many areas. We have a 460 which is sailed off the west coast of British Columbia in Canada. We have decide that function has won out over form on this one because we want to sail year-round. In order to do that you pretty much need a dodger. We went even further and put on a full cockpit enclosure. I don't think the boat looks as good with all that canvas, but it gives us comfortable outside living space year round. And I don't think it has completely messed up the look of the boat - I have kinda grown to like it. I don't know where you sail, but there should be someone near you who could do a good job on a dodger. I think ours looks pretty good. The key to making it look proportionally OK is to give it the appropriate amount of rake aft. Ours has done that and it is high enough to allow easy access to the cabin. With this boat, the companionway is very well done - you can actually walk down it facing foward without having to hold on if conditions are calm, right? It would be a shame to mess up the good access feature by building a dodger which is too short. (although it may look better) Ours has hand-holds on the outside of it to give a spot to hang onto when walking forward, and they put in some brushed leather re-inforcements which look good too. The forward windows are lexan. It gives clear, undistorted vision but they are quite sensitive to scratching. Check out the photo foum - I think Mark johnson has posted some pics of "Anthem" which show his dodger. I will post a pic of mine if I can find one which is suitable - most of them are taken from a distance and get fuzzy when I crop them. If you have more questions, ask away. Good Luck! Richard Owen

Anna - a photo has been posted

Anna - If you check the photo forum, look at the one named "Dodger for 460" and you will see what the canvas looks like. Richard Owen

Look at the 470

Check out the Huntermarine.com web site and look at the photos of the HS470 (Eddie Bauer 460). It has canvas by Lippincott out of St. Petersburgh FL. We are going through the same tradeoff for our 460 "Liberty". Most designs are either a "bimini" type design with 5 removable panels like the Lippincott or a more conventional dodger approach like the photo posted on the hunter owners page by Richard Owen. You can buy the Lippincott with 5 removable panels including SS side and aft rails for about $3100.00 and install it yourself. I like the mechanical layout of the Lippincott design. The dodger has two equal length bows that attached at a common point on each side of the cabin top in the middle (Fore and aft) of the Dodger. It has two SS struts at the front of the dodger that connect the forward bow to the deck forward of the instrument pod in front of the companionway. There are port and starboard rods installed between the top of the two bows inside the dodger or you can use external removable SS grab rails that use fast-pins. The aft bow is secured with two ajustable straps. It has five removeable window panels. The forward struts are covered by the zipper seams that attach the three forward window panel sections. There are no cover seams to hide the two bows on the side panels. This appears to be an excellent design because it provides two attached inverted triangles (as seen from the side) that fixes the height the height of the dodger from the deck. There are no bending loads on any of the SS bows. In addition, the side hand rails can be removed using a fast-pin type design and the aft bow can be folded forward with the windows removed and then a boot can be used to protect the Sunbrella material when the boat is not being used. I'm still looking at other options in the Annapolis area.
