Documenting a 34

We're having "Frigate" documented, and the guy who's doing it for the broker/lender/me will need to permanently afix the documentation numbers inside the boat. Now, I don't really want him (or us....) just strolling in, looking around and saying "That's a good spot!" So, where do you suggest putting the numbers on the O'Day 34/35? We'd prefer it to be a bit out of the way, but we realize it has to be easily seen. Suggestions? Michael O'

Numbers

I have a 34 and the original owner put them on the mast since it is keel stepped. They look like numbers you would buy at home depot for a mailbox and they have them stuck vertical on the mast. Hope this helps.

R

Rod Johnson,

must be PERMANENT!

Putting them on the mast is not sufficient! All a thief needs to do to remove this identification is peel the numbers off, or for that matter, remove the mast. The Documentation number must be marked as follows (quoted from USCG Vessel Doc. web-site) "The official number assigned to documented vessels, preceded by the abbreviation "NO" must be marked in block-type Arabic numerals at least three inches high on some clearly visable interior structural part of the hull. The number must be permanently affixed so that alteration, removal, or replacement would be obvious and cause some scarring or damage to the surrounding hull area." I have seen boats that have the number carved into a teak plank that is screwed and glued to a stringer, bulkhead, berth face, or the inside of the hull. Many boatowners apply stick-on letters to the inside of the hull and then lay a thin layer of wetted-out fiberglass over the numbers to make them permanent. Many sailboats have this number located on the hull inside a cockpit locker. But whatever you do, they MUST be PERMANENT. I have included a link to the "frquently asked questions" page of the USCG Documentation web-site.

Doc Numbers for O'Day 34

A good spot is on the portside hull section immediately adjacent to the Water heater. It is accesible through the cockpit's seat locker. It is reasonably out of the way but can be seen once the locker is open. Good luck with your O'Day. We have owned a 28', have recently bought a 34' and believe O'Days are great boats and an outstanding value for the money.

numbers

All I was telling him where mine were located, at no point did I tell him I was an expert. The numbers are also located in the engine compartment on my boat as well. Not sure I am compliant but the boat is 20 years old and the numbers have been in both those locations since day one. Please don't report me!!!!!

Locker / Lazarette........Maybe

Gotta' admit, putting the numbers next to the water heater would certainly be preferable. I'll ask a couple of sources what "clearly visible" translates to. Might work...... Michael O'

R

Rod Johnson,

No problem, if in 2 locations

I was assuming that the numbers were only on the mast, if they are also in the engine compartment you are OK...as long as they are permanently there and not on anything easily removed. Heck, having the number on the mast might make it less likely to be stolen during any time the mast is unstepped.....not that anyone would "walk off" with an O'Day 34 mast.

Holding Tank Area

My numbers are under the V berth next to the holding tank glassed over. They're out of the way and would be rather timely to find. P.S. I'm turning Mike in to the number police.
