Has anyone "Documented" there H260 (or other small sailboat) as opposed to "Registering" it each year? Does it even make sense to document a trailerable boat?

documenting a boat

I don't thing you will be able to document a H260 as it is too small. If I remember correctly the boat must displace 5 tons before it can be documented. the 260 is too small, but double check the coast guard web site. The big thing about doucmation is that it give a bank a "legal" advantage if the loan was not paid,as the have a better standing legaly to reposses the boat. It also has some advantages if you were to take your boat to another country. All in all I would not worry about it and just register your boat, you will be legal anywhere in the USA and not have to pay a documatiion fee (one time cost, prices vary but start around 300 and go up)as well as a state registration fee. Good Luck !

Boat Documentation

If your boat could be documented in Virginia, you would be exempt from Personal Property Taxes. I don't know if that is true of all states, but I believe the Federally sanctioned documentation supercedes state and local personal property taxes nation wide.

Texas wants taxes

I read recently that Texas now requires documented vessels to also register with the state and pay all requisite fees. Other states may choose to go this route to generate more tax revenues and further regulate our sport.

Not exempt in CA.

In California, they do not require a state registration if you are documented, but you are still subject to Personal Property Taxes. The registration fee is only $10 every two years. It is probably costing them more to run the program that what they take in.

I do know of several H26's that are documented. You still have to register it but instead of putting your ID numbers on the bow you put the boats name. The regulations specify how the name is to be displayed. There is no personal property tax in Michigan but boat registration for he H26 is over $100 every 3 years (it is based on length) whether documented or not. Of course if you register as sail only and don't have a motor it is a flat fee of $12 every 3 years regardless of size. You would not want to get caught with a motor though in that case so I just pay the higher amount. The money is used to fund the building and refurbishing of public transient marinas around the Great Lakes. These provide short term dockage for about $1 per foot per night. They are great for traveling around the Great Lakes by water. We use them extensively while vacationing on our boat so I don't really mind the registration fee. We spend a few a few days in a nice small town then sail on to another location. My wife gets to do some shopping, I get to do some sailing, and the kids get to play in the park and explore.
