Two websites...

Here are the links. One is to look up by vessel name. Hi Dan, I used the website last year to fill out our documetion info.......it was quite easy, however.....the form is not up to date, we probably lost a week or two....they did send the new form and all was okay.......YOu can call them toll free at 800-799-8362...or fax...304-271-2405.......If you're looking to document your boat this is so easy and saves you hundreds of dollars...they are quick to respond and very service oriented.....Priscilla

Why document with USCG?

If one is going to stay within US coastal and inland waters, why would one bother to document their vessel with the USCG? What advantages does it convey?? Our boat was documented by one of the POs, but we haven't gotten around to applying for redocumentation as the new owners. Why should we spend the money? It looks like the fees will add up...

Most lenders require it

Unlike motor vehicles, there is no nationwide network of boat titles and registrations...in fact, some states DON'T title boats. CG documentation is a type of federal title, and often the only continuous paper trail of a boat's history and any liens against it.

Why we documented

Depends on how where you plan to sail. Our boat is over 5 tons, so we had to document. One advantage is when it comes to selling your boat. It makes it much easier to obtain the title. The $133 fee is a one time charge, it renews yearly free of charge. If you plan to document your boat, we were told there are people who do this for you for $300 or more because it was so difficult to do it yourself. Well we found out otherwise. Priscilla
