Documentation problem

10 years ago I documented my 1990 Hunter 33.5 with the Coast Guard. I am now selling my boat, and my broker says the hull number is incorrect. It should be HUNJ01961990 (same hull number on the bill of sale). The documentation certificate however has the number as UNJ0I96I990. Notice that the two numbers "1" are typed as a capitol letter "I". the photo I took of the HIN on the hull and pencil rubbing appear to use capital "I" instead of number "1". The broker is trying to get this corrected with the Documentation Center, but they are taking quite some time. The official number on the documentation certificate is 1149367. I have found the listing in the Coast Guard records on the Internet, but they don't list the hull number. The broker tried to get the records of manufacturing from Hunter, but claims because of the bankruptcy, they do not have access to the old records. Any suggestions out there? Thanks.

Hi Ken, I too have a 1990 Hunter 33.5 and it apparently was built 5 boats before yours (on the production floor at the same time. My Hull Identification No. is HUNJ0191I990. The HUN is forHunter. The letter J is the model (33.5) the 0191 is the "serial No." for that model and model year. The letter I is for September manufacturing month, and the 990 is for 1990 model year. The Coast guard National Vessel documentation center office told me they are 4 month backlog. I am trying to relist my boat, in late December, they were working on September requests.... 1 800-799-8362 1-304-271-2400.

A call tho them and explain your case to a listening person... they are very helpfull...

Ken, I forgot to mention that Hunter used the letter I for September since it's the ninth letter of the alphabet for the ninth month.

Actually the "I9" means the boat was built in September, 1989, and the last two digits represent the model year, 1990.
