documentation numbers

We are getting ready to take our boat into Canadian waters and
the boat is documented. As far as I can tell, no documentation
numbers have ever put on the boat. We know all of the regs, but
if anyone has some suggestions of where and how to put them
so they aren't too obnoxious, we would appreciate the info.

Jim,
Our Vega is a documented vessel, but the numbers are burned into a
board that the previous owner mounted (glued?) within the cabin on
the painted hull interior, below the cubbyholes in the head. We have
sailed the boat into Canadian waters, from the San Juan Islands, for
years and have never been asked about our documentation numbers.

Are you entering Canada from the Atlantic or Pacific coast? If the
Pacific, I hope you'll be able to attend the Vega rendezvous at Port
Browning on the last weekend of July!

I drilled them with a 1/16 drill in 4 inch numbers in the forepeak bulkhead.
Not conspicuous but sufficient to meet USCG requirements, I'm pretty sure.

By the way, I still have that Walker Mark IIIA taffrail log for sale. New,
in box, all spares.

We acquired our Vega in the spring of 2002 and when
we had it surveyed the documentation number was on the
starboard bulkhead inside the lazerette in 4 inch
stick on letters. We were told if we put a layer of
fiberglass over the numbers so they could not be
easily tampered with it would meet USCG standards. We
used a single layer of figerglass cloth and applied a
layer of West System T101 over it. The T101 came in a
small two part package and had just enough to cover
the numbers.

Our Vega was documented from the beginning and came to us with Documentation vitals routed/wood-burned into a piece of teak which is well expoxied against the cockpit wall off center aft in the starboard locker (no holes or fasteners). It's easily inspectible and, importantly, not in the way of anything. Enjoy Canada.

Good question Jim. I've seen them carved (with a router) into the mast support beam, but that would not be my first choice if it could be avoided. Another option I've seen (Not on a Vega) is a plank with the numbers routed out in the same way glassed onto the inside of the hull in the forepeak or in the cockpit near the tiller. Since I am planning, eventually, to have Lealea documented, I'll be interested in your solution.

Aloha,

Chuck
