I just bought a brand new (demo) Catalina 309 in Virginia and am having it shipped to Kentucky, I am going to Document the boat with the Coast Guard, Virginia says the taxes get paid in Kentucky.

I contacted the County clerks office in Marshall county Kentucky and the person I spoke with believes I have to pay a small tangible return tax annually and no sales tax.

Does anyone know it all works?

you petition the uscg for documentation. the state finds you havent paid sales tax and sends you a bill. you pay bill and pay doc and everything is fine. in kali there is a dept called equalization--lol board of equalization--they send the bill unless you pay them before the y find ye....after that, there is no fee besides any property tax coming out of your wallet annually. find a documentation expert --there are such entities--i used dona jenkins--is out of san diego but i know she does stuff world wide--is good for info.
i hope this answers your questions...

Yes John, bought the boat from DYC in Deltaville and will be transporting it to Kentucky in a couple of weeks.

Congrats! I bought my 309 from them also, and had a good experience before and after the sale (mine was the first one sold in the lower Chesapeake). Great boat - I'm sure you'll enjoy her.

Sig -- I used to keep my USCG documented sailboat at Kenlake, and folks told me not to bother with state registration. It gets even more convoluted based on what county/state you live in, what county the boat is in, etc etc. I never registered it and I haven't seen a bill, but I also don't live out there. KY Lake is great boating, I miss it every time I see a jellyfish here in the Chesapeake!

I would suggest that you NOT register your boat in Kentucky. You will end up paying a personal property tax every year based on the value of your boat. I know, I live in Kentucky and pay or have paid it on cars, trucks, airplanes, motorcycles and boats. One of the reasons my Oday lives in Tennessee... Have fun with your new boat!!!
