Docklines chafe gunnel edge

The stern docklines on my boat chafe the edge of the gunnel in their path to the dock cleats and apparently have done so for the 10 year life of the boat prior to me getting it. Chocks seem too large and placement next to edge precludes thru bolts, if moved inboard for bolts additional lateral stress on the chocks. Chocks seem like too much for the minor nature of prob. and would be stressed by normal fore & aft surge. So that leaves me with strakes(stainless), screwed & glued right on the edge, but they seem so lightweight. I wonder if the downward pressure of lines would deform them. Thought of some pretty ones from wood batten but they would wear too much. Anyway anyone figured an elegant solution to this? I just want to stop them rubbing the gelcoat off with something doesn't look like it came from Pepboys. Got terry cloth towels wrapped on them now.

Rub strakes

Ted SS Rub strakes are the answer. They'll hold just fine. I still can't understand why people use chocks. My dock neighbor rarely visits his boat (three times in five years). Nice Pearson 33. The lines chafe through his chocks and I have to keep resetting them so his boat won't blow away while he's gone. Our docklines, like yours, lead directly from the cleats. I haven't had any fiberglass rubbing issues in 7 years, but I do check regularly. We've installed rub strakes elsewhere on board where lines chafe on teak (traveler car lines, vang line, etc.). Use the SS rub strakes. They're not getting a whole lot of stress put on them, so the two screws and maybe some silicone underneath - no need to 5200 :) Stu

Thanks Stu, Strakes it is with a little silicone.

Been waffleing on this for months, couldn't find a boat with strakes to see how well they held up.
