I've used both the landing loop and the docking stick. Used the loop for two seasons. It worked ok but was hard to store and began to rust after the first year. Didn't really love it but it got the job done.
The docking stick is what we use now and I'm real happy with it. Easy to store, won't rust cause its plastic and it works!

Why not just go to WalMart, get an expandable painting poll, put a hook on it and you are done. Save LOTS of money in the mean time. I was looking for the same concept to snag a cleat if I have to come it a little hotter than usual.

The Docking Stick!

We dock by dropping a loop on a midship spring line unto a pole or cleat at the stern end of our assigned berth, whether a slip, dock, or wall.

Once the loop is secure on the target pole/cleat, steering the boat away from the spring line allows control of the boat with just the throttle and helm in forward gear 100% of the time.

For 12 years we used this approach holding the loop on the hook of our boat hook with one hand. The only, occasional problem was missing the target pole/cleat due to piloting, distance (reaching the top of a tall pole) or communication issues.

For the past 2 years, the Docking stick solves this last problem by holding the loop on the end of our pole, allowing accurate placement of the loop, even at full extension of our boat hook.

Highly recommended!
