Dock lines - Make you own or buy them?

So do you buy dock lines, or do you purchase line in bulk and make your own? Do you put in your own eye splices?

Curious to know who is doing what. Me, I buy bulk 3-strand and put in my own eyes. Haven't tried to eye double braid. That might take some practice.

I had a lot of eye-spliced lines on board when I bought the boat, but have purchased 6 more for a price I couldn't pass up at WM. Started a thread on the topic that day, and probably helped them sell 50. I got a 25 foot length of 3/8" three-strand for $6, with the eye already spliced. Red, white and blue.

I've only tried two eye splices in 3-strand, and they didn't work out so well. Need to buy a lesson or two from someone at the club. The videos on the topic seem to lose me.

I make my own
I like to have loops long enough that I don't have to pull the splice through the fairleads
3 strand is really easy to splice
Can save a bunch by buying in bulk
Can custom make bow, stern and spring lines to fit my exact layout
As wear happens you can re splice and re use

@Johnb - at first read this got my attention as something that could be important, but while thinking about it, I can't envision an application of a spliced line running through a fairlead. Is the fairlead you refer to a chock that handles a docking line coming aboard? If so, are you saying you like the splice to be outboard of the point the line comes over the rail (or through the chock actually)?

Two 50' 5/8 three strand with no eyes. Bow/spring and stern/spring. Long tails on boat cleat so they can be adjusted from the boat..

Ditto. I learned to splice three strand via YouTube. It is very nice to make custom length spring lines. I also make a few spring lines with oversized eyes and run the line thru 1" clear tubing which makes it really easy for the Admiral to drop on a cleat coming in. The tubing keeps the eye open.

i have made all my dock lines to date ...eye splices on all and some i have back spliced the bitter end as well ....this is good practice for anyone i have a set of 5/8 and a set of 1/2 i also have spring lines along with some spares ...i find it economical as well ...i use nylon only no dacron because of the spring stretch factor

The Rope Store, some nice Canadian folks who show up at Boat Show every year with a rainbow of docklines in all useful diameters. I buy their 5/8" double-braid nylon docklines with eye splice at a great price. I like double braid for the easy hand and quick cleat action capability. You can mix and match, so if you want your docklines one color and your spring lines another color...easy to do. They sell online here.

I bought 4 of those WM, Red, White & Blue Dock lines that SFS highlighted in his post. I just opened the package and put them on the boat in anticipation of Hermine here in NJ. Hunker down everyone.

Three years ago, I bought approximately 300 ' of 5/8" nylon double braided line on eBay, local purchase. Quality line at a ridiculously cheap price. I spliced a set of 6 lines; most with 30 feet lengths.
Very time consuming to splice double braided line as a novice; took several hours for each including separating the the core from the cover and splicing the eye. Then whipping the end and stitching / whipping where the eye joins the line. I was pleased with the outcome, but I gotta tell you that it was a lot of work. Just like anything, you have to do a bunch to get proficient. Have enough line to do 4 more 30 foot lines. Probably saved about 2/3 the cost of prespliced lines. Haven't gotten around to doing the remaining lines yet!! Have also spliced lots of 3 strand nylon; much easier and quicker than double braid.

i will add that doing your own lines helps build more self confidence in your mariner skills .....learn to do for your self onboard and you will have less "Oh $hit!" moments

On braided line and 3-strand, I found it better to use several colors of left-tip pens. Mark your paper directions with the colors at each step, then mark the rope with that same color. Alot easier to follow.

Ron,
Definitely agree with you, certainly makes it easier to mark the line with different color felt pens to visualize where the strands go.

Make my own. Prefer laid line (twisted) over double braid for dockline/anchor lines.

Make my own and leave at slip. Carry store bought ones on board to tie up elsewhere.

Purchased 80 feet of 5/8th inch nylon three strand from New England rope so that I could make my own dock line and end eye. I prefer to splice a half twist in my eye so that it will not come off the cleat unless I untwist the eye. Two forty foot lengths of dock line stay with the boat at all times. Each has enough length from boat stern and/or bow cleat to dock cleat and back to mid ship cleat as a fore and aft spring.

Learning to splice 3-strand and double braid is fun and relatively easy. Lots of stuff on You Tube and, of course, the Brion Toss video. The only tools you really need are a sharp knife, a role of tape, and a fid/pusher. Once you learn the basics, you'll find making up your own lines is a really satisfying activity.

A short story. Skipper is new to the boat, and family (four boys and wifey) set sail from Everett marina to Blake Island for the weekend. Clear skies, but wind picks up and seas become lumpy. Wifey says to stow the sails and maybe layover in Edmonds marina until seas settle. Okay.

No mid ship cleat, just bow and stern. High freeboard, and inexperienced skipper, gives us trouble maneuvering the boat close enough so that a fisherman on the dock can help us tie up on a finger. My one son on the bow throws the line to the fisherman not realizing that the dock line eye was on only one horn. Fisherman grabs the line and begins to muscle the boat toward the finger. Eye slips off the horn and in the drink he goes and it's cold.

Another fisherman comes to our aid, we get the boat tied up while the other fisherman helps his partner out of the water. We bring blankets and hot tea to help get the wet fisherman warmed up. All ends well and later the seas settle enough so that we can head out for Blake Island and a nice weekend sail.

Needless to say, my next project was to add mid ship cleats to the boat, which has helped immensely solo docking. When making dock line eyes I make it a point of placing a half twist in the eye so that to place or remove the eye on the boat cleat requires a slight untwist. This half twist assures a secure cleat mount and avoids an accidental dismount.
