:thumbup:The other day I received an email from Photobucket telling me about a story contest they were holding and it gave me the idea that I could use this to integrate my Ship's Log with all my photos I have stored on there. Well, I have to say their story software isn't top notch stuff and I was beginning to wonder if it was worth the effort. I also began to wonder if I'm the only one out there that keeps a log since I can't recall anyone on here ever mentioning one. So I'm curious, does anyone write down their adventures anymore to aid the old memory later?

If your curious about our first season or just really bore with nothing better to do, you can find our log here:

We do keep a log but only on the our longer trips. The daysailing / overnighters close to home are not in the log as we are too lazy.

Years ago I did put together a word doc. that I use to print my log. When I need more pages, I simply print more.

I should....

Something to keep in mind if you every want a USCG captain's license is they want to see days at sea... a log would be easier way to show that.

<snip>
re required to have a minimum of 360 days experience on board a boat since you were 15 years old. 90 of those days need to be in the last three years. As little as 4 hours on a boat can be considered one day. And in one 24 hour period you can claim just one day of sea service time. If you own the boat yourself you sign off your own time. If your time was spent on friends or families boats they can sign the time off for you. Your time does not need to be signed off by a licensed Captain and in fact you do not even need to be operating the boat yourself for this time to count.

OTOH, once you have your ticket, you are subject to a higher standard than a simple sailor/boater. OR, should there be a problem you could be charged with negligence for improper actions...

We started a log our 2nd year with das boot - but we find we are too busy sailing (lazy) to write anything in the damn thing other than here or there.

I'm positive someday we will regret our inattention but I doubt we will improve. There's always a New Years resolution right?

If I kept a log of work and repairs - well; I'd never get any work or repairs done because I'd be too busy writing about them.....

And then there is the expenditure log citibank kindly keeps for me - I have learned to avoid reading that one too often and just pay the damn thing or I'd be so busy crying to write anything anywhere ever.....

Ships Logs have gone digital. There is an app for that. Log captures current weather, including wind speed. Captures pics from your cellphone, makes charts, keeps speed logs, all sorts of stuff

I do only for longer trips... and it is not a true "log" but more of a diary entry. I have my trips written up on a word document with photos inserted. More so I can remember the details of the adventures that a true ships log. For instance, I don't record barometric pressures or anything like that but in my story I usually do talk about the wind speed, direction and basic weather conditions but in the context of the story than a data entry.

We keep a written ship's log for all of our trips (easy for me since for the past few years I've ONLY done at least a single overnight at anchor! - daysails are too much work!).

I write up when we left, where we went, and what we've done.

I keep a separate maintenance log (up to 15 pages in 14 years) on an Excel spreadsheet with place for dates, time, engine hours, fuel, oil changes and remarks (details of work done). I also have space for notes about when the next oil, transmission, fuel and zinc changes are needed.

I enjoy re-reading the old exploits. Up to seven books now from the past 25 years. I slip in some photos, too.

I wish I knew how to write apps for iPhones, iPads and the like as it would be cool to have an app where these logs could be entered, pictures added, snapshots of GPS and all the features today's phones offer.

Note to self : figure out how to do this and sell it for $1.99

Update: Crap! It already exists. Looks like the one called boating suite is ideal. Has log book, maintenace log, shopping list, to do list, expense log, fuel log and other stuff. $4.99 and works on both iPad and iPhone

Just keep a ship's blog, like you're doing.

I clicked "like", but it required me to join something. Facebook, I think.

I think not. Sorry!

I keep a hard cover ships log. Everytime I go out with guests I have them sign it and make a couple of notes such as weather, temp. collisions with icebergs;), etc. Later it is nice to look back and remember. I also make note of any repairs, modifications, etc and how much money I saved??? Well ya know what I mean.

I keep a composition book as my log book, I fill it out even for my day trip which helps me keep track for my time when renewing capts license.. I just make entries such as time date , who was onboard and where we went and what we did.

Regards,

Fernando
