What's the advantage of a backstay split setup versus the original . I have a 1974 c22 that doesn't have the split setup. Thanks.Moe

Better performance, both big and small wind

The split backstay allows you to have about 4 inches of sag on your forestay for small winds thus increasing power. By tightening it up you remove this sag and also bend the mast, thus flattening the main and jib. The flattened sails depower the boat in big winds. It is an inexpensive modification that returns big performance. I have done this on my 22 and recommend it to others. Ray

Split backstay and raising the mast.

Moe, The split backstay mounts outside the ends of your traveller and extends to approx boom heigth. It has no effect on raising your mast. I use a home made ginpole mounted about 2 feet up from the base of the mast and raise it using the mainsheet block and tackle. I use a couple of bungie's to hold up the shrouds so they don't catch and bend. The manual that "Catalina Direct" sells for about $10 has some good illustrations on split backstays and a whole bunch of other gear for 22's. They also sell that stuff or you can build your own from the pictures. With a few items like the backstay, main outhaul and longer genoa tracts and cars you can make your boat haul fanny fairly fast. Good luck, Ray

Wait a minute

I was recently advised to rig my 1973 C-22 split backstay according to the 1987 manual.I went out bought all the blocks and eyebolts. Now the mainsheet block and tackle interferes with the eyebolts for the backstay. Will moving the eyebolts further away from the traveler bar solve this? Currently they are about 2 inches from the bar.
