The rub rail joint between the slotted rail and the deck has been calked since before I own the boat, I am not sure that is necessary, because I thought the hull halves were joined under the rail bolts that are outboard of the deck. Ideas?

no

i don't calk mine. on my previous boat, a 410, I had a replacement rub rail installed and the yard certainly didn't use calk on it.

I bought mine new. It's never been caulked and never leaked, but.

it's on my to-do list. The deck crud that gets under the toe rail is a pain to clean. I'm thinking white silicone.

Why?

I really do not see a need to caulk. The deck/hull flange is an outtie. The two pieces have butyl tape and bolted together every few inches.

I would suggest that you get a large phillips screw driver and a torque wrench and tighten all of the bolts.

I owned my H'31 from 1987 - 2006 and it never leaked.

Thanks for the input,

I have cleaned out the old calk, and washed the dirt out from under the joint with a high pressure hose nozzle.
I will re calk before the weather turns cold.

24 years and no problem but....

I've owned my '84 34 since 1984 and the toe rail was never caulked and has not been a problem. Patchez has spent most of her life in the Chesapeake Bay and it does freeze here in winter.

The only problem I've had with the rail was when Patchez was in Pensacola FL for Hurricane Erin in 1995. Boat was hit with about 100 mph winds. Some lines to the dock broke and Patchez rubbed up and down a piling until about half the thickness of the piling was worn away over a 2 ft high area. The groves on that part of the rub rail were worn away also. Some nicks in the gel coat but the rail did save the boat. Did not replace the rail since they don't make that extrusion anymore and I did not want two different looks on one boat. I had a small leak near where the rub rail took the pounding. Tighten up the screws in '95 and have not had a problem since (that I can see...)

Ours is caulked

The joint between the aluminum toe rail and deck was caulked on our 1987 h40 when we bought it in 1997.

Just this season the caulk is beginning to come loose. I will probably replace it. While the hull and deck should be sealed, I don't want water running off the deck and down the hull. I'd get black streaks like the newer Hunters.

BTW, each spring I check the bolts through the toe rail, hull and deck. Usually I tighten several of them.

H340 Rub Rail

I have seen a leak path from within the locker where the batteries are on our H340. It appears to come along one of the rub rail fasteners that looks like it goes through the deck seam. I believe we have several leaks like this. Temporarily I have caulked the upper edge of the rub rail so water doesn't get under it, but utlimately the rub rail should probably be taken off and all fastener holes checked to make sure they are sealed.
