Do short vent lines trump horizontal ones?

Hi Peggie, After reading your recommendations, I am going to replace the vent line to my holding tank. It currently is 1/2 inch inside diameter, nearly vertical after the first foot, and less than four feet total. I will go to 1 inch diameter hose. I could simply replace the current hose and fittings, or I could install a hose that would take a different route to the outside. I read that you recommend that the hose-run be horizontal. In my case, this would be impossible because the tank is at the waterline, and the vent exit must be several feet higher, so that it won't fill with water. I could run a hose about eight feet forward, almost to the bow, with the elevation being the same as at present, but with the slope being only about 20 degrees. Which would be better? A short vertical? or a long gentle slope?

The shorter, AND more horizontal the better

Straight is especially important. Going forward with a 1" vent is the best solution...but 8' is too long. A rise of anything up to about 45 degrees will work...which should allow you to take it forward and keep the length down to about 4'.
