Boat went up in flames today off the Ches Bay. News reports that every was rescued safely. Quite a pic huh? Ironically, they found the publisher David Merrill's body and the news said it was near the burning boat (Little Choptank for those of you who know the area.)

another Chesapeake fire

Friday the 16th I was on my way up the Bay from Hampton to Urbanna (in my Catalina 25) when a Hatteras 52 caught fire off New Point Comfort. I listened to the CG and nearby boats on channels 16 and 21A as fire boats raced past me. I watched the black smoke over the horizon for about an hour before it turned to white. When I finally got to New Point Comfort two hours later, there was a yellow buoy marking what I suppose was the sunken wreck. Ten people and 700 gallons of diesel fuel were aboard -- the people were all rescued safely,

You betcha they burn!!!

We have had two boats come into contact with high voltage power transmission lines near the Amtrak bridge on the Bush River in the past four years. One sailed into the wires, the other draged anchor. Both burned to the waterline.

Burning Man, Drowning.

Hey Mates, Just returned from checking out a 48' Celestial motor-sailor in dis-repair, to deliver to Oregon from S.F. ugh! Above title is a novel written by a friend and published... I lived in Hawaii, was in the SCUBA business there, and a bunch of us were resting on Waikiki when an explosion boasted the peace and a fire-ball went up where a 40ft Erickson was anchored! Well, all had been out on deck, four playmates, and the "captain" started a gasoline eingine without running the blowers, this was in the insurance report that I was privey to later (did a salvage job for them), and she blew. Minor burns. Oh yeah, fiberglass burns real good, the polyester resin is especially flammible, inflammible...volitile, flash-point, flash-gorden...anyway it DO burn...;-) Hs Ross been giving you guys hell, keepin them durn tigers away?:)

Ross,

The boat that dragged anchor did he come in contact with an underwater high voltage cable?

NO! these are over head lines.

About 300 yards below the bridge. When the chart says: PWR CABLE 35 FT AUTH. CLEARANCE . Believe it!!! It is well marked. A friend that witnessed it 4th of July weekend said at first they though that the boat fired at black powder cannon as a salute as they came up river.

High Voltage Electric

is wild wild stuff and most folk don't even have a clue, I recently got certified for scuba and met a guy that dives where the high voltage cable is and gets all the anchors that are caught there. No thank you won't catch me diving near there, and now I understand why my buddy's Catalina 30 has a "Watch for wires" sticker on his mast!

Burned from overhead cables...

Roy Bryson, One of our members of the Royal Suva Yacht club was taking his 40 ft ketch through the Vatu-i-ra passage, and into an inlet betwixt Viti-Levu and Vanu-Levu. He caught his mast on low hanging power lines, and ended up with third-degree burns on 80% of his body and nearly died. They are a definite danger, especially for hot-air-balloons...have a friend who takes folks up on charter, lotta fun too...;-)

well, it was actually a rhetorical question...;)

I too have seen fiberglass burn. No more info yet today, but the Ananpolis paper is pretty well consumed with the Merrill death, which is understandable since he owned the thing. I'll post any more info we get.
