I was just reading the Cobb thread and saw the offer to swap slips. Do many people swaps slips, this seems like a great idea to me.

Lots of Restrictions

Dockmasters don't like it much. Insurance, control, etc.

Most don't even allow it...

Marina has right to rent slip when you're out, they aren't likely to let you swap it out and take their profit away. Great idea tho. Swapping boats is an even better idea. There was site in Europoe that was doing this, but I've lost the link.

sub-rent my slip ??

"Marina has right to rent slip when you're out, they aren't likely to let you swap it out and take their profit away." How can this be? Can my landlord sub-rent my house when I'm away?

My mooring agreement

requires me to notify them (I believe it is two weeks in advance or it may be if I plan to have the boat off the lake for two weeks.) if I plan to move the boat off the lake so that they can notify transients that a space is available. r.w.landau

Swap Berths

Sailers This is an issue I think that is a world wide problem. I cannot see why ever boat owner that has a berth/mooring is on a register that is accessable via a web site. Say I want to sail to New Zealand for a month, this means my berth is available for this time and I need one when I get the NZ. Idealy I could go to this website and see whats available in NZ, and sailers in my area could use mine. There could also be provision for renting them out etc. I haven't done a lot of long haul sailing but when I do it would be great to know I have somewhere safe to berth. Just on the overnight trips I do here in Melbourne ( Port phillip bay ) you pull into any marina and you never know if there's anywhere to hook up. I think its up to us sailors to do something.

There's no "right" involved.....

in a dock agreements. They are contractrual in nature and can contain any requirements/provisions the owner wants to include and you are willing to sign, e.g., the right to lease to transients. Read your lease agreement...I'd venture to say that 80% of the marinas on the east coast have this provision. Probably west coast too. In Annapolis if you're a transient at a marina, you're pobably in someone else's slip who's cruising, on the hard, etc. Common practice. Your landlord (residence) could probably do the same thing if you would agree to it. I doubt most tentants would, hence the landlord couldn't rent it. The market (and some state laws) control.

I sub-leased mine - with Permission

In the summer of 2002 I was away from my marina for two months. I wanted the marina to sublet the slip while I was gone to help recover costs. Instead of taking it upon themselves to work out a "partial" contract, the allowed me to sublet it. I did sublet it to a friend for the two months I was away. If you do, get permission first. Because your contract probably specifies that the yard can rent it to a transient if you are away from the dock without notifying them. As far as swapping? Don't. Because you may end up with a slip partner who is wider than you expect and then the sparks will fly (literally). The yard carefully matches the boats that are in the marina.
