Any one know whethere there are yards around the NYC tri-state area that allow you to do bottom work yourself? Also, do you suppose the yards will be willing to negotiate on a haulout deep during winter since they're not getting any 'new' traffic during this period of time? For those of you who chose to let the yard do your bottom paint - do you supervise and check to make sure that they thoroughly pressure wash, sand and paint the bottom? Should I be concerned. My hunch is that the yard pressure washes and throws one coat of paint.

there is a marina called "Jude Thaddeus Glen Cove Marina" right next to a Brewer's yard. They allow owners to do any/all bottom work you want, including sanding, patching etc. They also have yard workers who will do it for you for a price. The only trick with this marina is they do not have a lot of water at their travel lift so you would need to arrange a time/date with them when it will be close to high tide. I think they have a little over 6' at high tide. It is a pretty laid back place if a little far from Brooklyn/NYC. I kept my 27' sailboat there 2 winters and did all my bottom work in the spring. They give you a 10% discount if you pay for winter storage by Sept. 1st.

Morgan Marina

Morgan Marina, in Sayreville, NJ, is probably a little closer to Brooklyn. They're on Raritan Bay, more or less directly across from the southern end of Staten Island. They do short hauls (reasonably priced) and allow DIY bottom work. Their phone # is 732-727-2289. Pete s/v EmmieLou (Oday 322) Little Silver, NJ
