How do I distinguish between a DS II and III? The boat I recently bought is titled as a 1985 O'Day Daysailer. It has O'Day placards and markings on it, and has "Daysailer" painted on the side of the cuddy.

The mast step is on top of the cuddy, and attaches with two pins.

Thanks,
Duane

1985 was a "transition year" between the DS II and DS III (I had previously thought 1985s were all DS II and 1986 was first year for DS III, have since found evidence of the change being phased in mid-year).

Anyway, the differences are that the DS III has more freeboard in the stern, the jibsheet tracks were moved up onto the upper edge of the cockpit combings and the cockpit was reshaped slightly. I've posted pictures of a DS II and a DS III below. Do you have any pictures of your new DS?

She sure looks like a DSIII, and you are correct.... this is definitley a DS III. Looks nice too!! Pretty great condition (based on those pics) for a 25 year old boat!

Thanks. Yeah, I think she will work out pretty well for us. Definitely new to sailing, only a few lessons on a lake in Seattle a couple of years ago.

My wife and I took her out for the first time this weekend. We need to get better raising the sails, and taking them back down, but the sailing part went great. We'll keep learning!
