DIY replacement for Hunter cockpit arch speaker/light box - anyone had success?

I have the normal white speaker/light pod on the arch of my 2004 Hunter 36. I don't use the speakers and the pod is in bad shape. I don't want the black one from Hunter store.

I was wondering about making a rectangle of starboard with four bolt holes and a hole to mount the light (no speakers). But I'm not sure if that would work and/or look OK.

Has anyone made a DIY replacement, with or without speakers? How did it work out? Did you run into issues?

I did exactly that on my boat. I mounted some starboard with lights and 12 v plugs. It works great and looks mostly ok there is a bit of a gap I'd like to figure out how to fill but it's been there for 4 years so I guess I am used to it.

Wish I would have cut the joints as 45s but the ends were an after thought the year after the main board ... been saying for 4 years I'm going to take it down and cut the ends on a 45 ... but sailing usually wins out
