Ballast is the weight placed in the keel to help keep the boat upright as it heels. It's part of the boat's weight, but by no means is it equal to the boat's weight. Displacement is the weight of water that is displaced by the boat. If the boat sinks, then it's equal to the volume of the boat times the weight of water per volume. Obviously, we don't want to dwell on that. If the boat is floating, then it displaces its own weight of water, which is the same as "cradle weight". For my 29.5, the ballast is listed as 3,000 lbs and the (total) displacement is 8,900 lbs. So that means there's 3,000 lbs of ballast and about 6,900 lbs in the rest of the boat. Provided your keel bolts hold, your ballast doesn't change. But of course the displacement increases as soon as you step aboard, add equipment, fill the tanks, etc. Hope this helps.
