This web site's specifications give Displacement for the Hunter 29.5 at 7000 lbs and Ballast at 2400 lbs. I have an old Hunter brochure which gives me Displacemnt at 8900 lbs and ballast at 3000 lbs. Which one is correct? Joe Aquilina SY Maverick Port of Valletta MALTA

Ballast

The ballast figure has to do with the wieght of the keel, the displacement of the boat has to do with amount of water being displaced or the actual weight of the boat.

Different numbers for each

Thanks Dion, Yes I realise what you say but I was quoting two different numbers for displacement and 2 different numbers for ballast. See reply from Alex Regards Joe

Related question

My understanding is that the 29.5 weighs 12,000 pounds in the cradle. How much weight does it then displace?

Ballast is the weight placed in the keel to help keep the boat upright as it heels. It's part of the boat's weight, but by no means is it equal to the boat's weight. Displacement is the weight of water that is displaced by the boat. If the boat sinks, then it's equal to the volume of the boat times the weight of water per volume. Obviously, we don't want to dwell on that. If the boat is floating, then it displaces its own weight of water, which is the same as "cradle weight". For my 29.5, the ballast is listed as 3,000 lbs and the (total) displacement is 8,900 lbs. So that means there's 3,000 lbs of ballast and about 6,900 lbs in the rest of the boat. Provided your keel bolts hold, your ballast doesn't change. But of course the displacement increases as soon as you step aboard, add equipment, fill the tanks, etc. Hope this helps.

Official answer

The Malta Hunter agent gave me the following answer. Displacment is 7000 lbs, Ballast is 2400 lbs. Other figures were for a projected deep fin boat but no 29,5 was built as a deep fin. Joe Aquilina SY Maverick Port of Valletta MALTA
