I lost the mast on my 1994 Hunter 30T when the forestay parted. The extrusion is Z-Spar 401A. It has been discontinued so I can no longer order it from the manufacturer. If I can locate a couple feet of this extrusion the rigger can sleeve it and repair it, otherwise I am in for a very expensive new mast. Anybody know where I can find some?

I bet if you contact the manufacturer of the extrusion they would be able to supply a short piece?

How about checking for parts from hurricane-damaged boats? You might be able to find a mast or part of one where the boat hull was totaled. Insurance companies might be able to direct you to a source if they have scrapped out a boat on a claim.

Have you contacted your insurance company? This iswhat insurance is for.

Dismasting can be an accidental ocurrence covered under some marine insurance policies. Years ago our mast collapsed after what we surmise was the failure of a clevis pin. We reported the incident to our insurer BoatUS and they sent out an Adjuster. We were surprised when rather than fixing the mast they elected to replace it as the boat was 15 yrs old at the time. They covered the mast, standing and running riggin and the rigger's labor. Most people assume that things that break on boats are not covered. An accidental ocurrence does not have to do with a collision; damage caused to an engine for overheating due to a plastic bag blocking the raw water intake is a tipical accidental ocurrence that is frequently covered.

So far my insurance company (Progressive) has denied the claim citing normal wear and tear. Rigger disagrees.

Don't settle for that. Consequential loss should be covered. By that I mean that what failed isn't covered, but the resulting damage should be. I had exactly the same thing happen to me a lot of years ago with State farm. They had a non-marine adjuster involved and they did the same thing. I asked for a re-consideration based upon what i said and got it. You may want to do some research on the subject.

No offense but this is what you get with many of the "automobile" insurance companies.

Listen to what others are telling you and persue them.

I don't plan to settle. I accept that I must pay for the standing rigging which failed but think the mast repairs and furler, which was also wrecked, should be paid by the insurance company.
