I have heard on the grapevine that the rubbing strips of certain Hunter boats have a discoloration problem caused by stains and UV. I would welcome information as to what remedies (if any) have been found for this problem. We are obtaining some of this material (new) for our own tests but are looking for a few adventurous souls to to a "beta testing" for us with our products. Please reply via this site not the IslandGirlProducts.com website. This will be at no cost to the testers but we would like there to be some logical standardized method used and we will provide material gratis. No more than ten volunteers are needed. Jim, I would be happy and delighted to test any of your products. I have a 1997 Hunter 340 with the rub rail that you mention. I clean them with car wash soap when scrubbing the boat but they are somewhat discolored and various stain. I could take before and after photos with my digital camera and e-mail you the results. Simple Green
..seemed to work the best, but needed a lot of elbow grease with a green scrubbing pad to work. I have found Avon's Skin So Soft to work for some stains. I have not noticed any UV deterioration on rub rails. By the way, my reference is a Hunter 29.5, 3 years old.

I would like to try it
I have a 1983 hunter 20, with brown stripes that have faded over the years. Wax makes them look better but it dont last long.other than being dull (stripes&gellcoat) it is a great boat. John.

I'll do a beta test
I have a 1990 Hunter 23 with black rub rails. I have been using a general boat wash in a bucket of water and a scrub brush. You should ahve my address as I ordered some of your products earlier this year. They are working fine. Wish I had more time to sail after done with the cleaning! I enjoy both. Jay s/v Winter Solace

Forgot to add in my earlier post. I'd like to try any new product. My description for Simple Green wasn't an endorsement - you just asked for what people have tried. It takes too much scrubbing and doesn't get it all off. Just does a better poor job than other things I've tried. Seems like there should be some way to make a cleaner that recognizes what rub rails rub against, which is pilings.

I would still like to get 3-5 more victims for the rub-rail test. I shall be in the SF Bay area for the next few days and may not be able to reach a computer for updates. A similar Beta test will soon be available for new Superwax and a non-skid sealant, for which I still need a name ("gecco foot" doesnt sound too classy! 'Sure Step' by Aurora
I beleive that Steve was referring to 'Sure Step' by Aurora. It is carried by Boaters World. I have it and have used it on the non-skid areas with very good results. I have not tried it on the rub rails (just didn't think of it), but I will. Dick C. S/V Puffin '90 H-33.5

Jim I have a '97 340 whose rub rail is very dirty. I am in TX and it was to hot to do anything but sail this summer. Well, that is my story anyway. I have started my fall cleanup, fixup, upgrade list and would be glad to try the product some weekend. Let me know at Sailing84@aol.com.

I was talking about Jim's name for his 'new' non-skid cleaner..... As much as i like the Island Girl products, I get them confused by their names. I was just thinking that "gecco foot" may not be the best name for the cleaner! This is why they don't let chemists into the marketing department! <haha, Jim Willis>

Thanks for the input and apologies for delays- back in town then 'flu! I will try to get out some little sample for the rub-rail test during the next few days. I would still like to get one or two more testers for this. On the GECCO FOOT (you're right Steve it sounds sort of like athlete's foot). I am about ready to get tests of this done too. Actually "Island Girl's non-skid sealer" might be less problematic. With regard to our product names I think that they are great except for "CRYSTAL CLEAR" people confuse it with CLEAR HORIZONS and its not really clear anymore- sort of a straw color with the anti-oxidants etc. Its for Neutral colors and I thought "Neutral Clear" would be a good name. Need new labels very soon so this is important. Had I used Gecco Foot I had a great logo with a lizard on a cross-hatch background. THese creatures can even walk on the ceiling without falling! However, the non-skid sealant is really to seal against stains not to enhance grip (although it does a bit). Will post more on this separately. Thanks Jim W
