Disassembly of the Shaft Coupling

I am about ready to install a dripless seal on my prop shaft. Just wanted to find out what the best way is to remove the coupling half so I can do this. Can anyone with experience give me the benefit of how to do that? Thanks

Buy four new bolts about 3/4" longer than what you have now and place a spacer (slightly smaller in diameter than your shaft, like a wrench socket) in between the flanges and tighten the longer bolts. It should push the shaft right out. Good luck.

Mainsail had an excellent how to with photos a while back. I installed a dripless on my shaft and have been very happy with it. Just be sure the spacer (as mentioned above) you use is slightly smaller than the shaft diameter to allow adequate clearance!! I thought mine was perfect but ended up scoring the shaft during the pressing operation. Had to remove the shaft which required dropping the rudder to machine the shaft for the new coupling- very expensive! If you do it right, you won't regret it. If you do have to replace the coupling, use the longer length split one.
My bilge is bone dry for only 10 times what it would have cost to do it right the first time!
It's not hard to do but take your time once you get it back together to get the shaft alignment as close to perfect as possible. Good luck

Thanks! This is a good reference Frazzle and I will use it. Is there any particular type of hose that is recommended for the vent line? Would not a hose that you can see the water line in work better so you know the seal is flooded?
I won't use a clear PVC hose below the waterline. If properly installed as a "vent" then water always finds level and any entrapped air will make its way out. If you really want to test it give her a good blast of reverse and water will come out the hose......

Oh and whenever you remove a coupling the shaft and coupling should go to a shop to test the fit and face and machine or replace the coupling as necessary. Using the bolt method to press off a coupling CAN throw it way out of true thus requiring a fit & face...

If you read my article pay the CLOSEST attention to the WARNINGS........;)
