dirty sailcovers - suggestions for chemical solutions?

The company that I've always used to make my canvass says to use Dawn dish liquid and a soft brush. It's mild and won't hurt the fibers or excessively remove the water repellant treatment. After a few years of cleaning you might have to re water proof.
If you use laundry soap the only one he recommended was Ivory Snow. But stick to Dawn.
