Directions Reversed

On my Hunter 28, the forward and reverse lever works backwards. IE: in reverse the boat goes forward and in forward she goes backwards.

It it possible that the prop is reversed? Any suggestions?

Sounds like the wrong prop rotation to me.

First, verify the rotation direction of the prop shaft when you are going forward. Yanmar engine, right? With boat going forward, the prop shaft should be turning clockwise when viewed from aft. (top of coupling going to stbd when moving forward) If your lever is in reverse when this is happening, someone has messed up the shift lever connection. If your lever is in reverse and the coupling is turning counterclockwise to move the boat forward, you have the wrong "hand" prop. Should be a right hand prop for the Yanmar.

There may not be anything wrong. I had three O'days built in the late '70s, one with a volvo-penta, one with a yanmar, and one with a westerbeke engine. On every one I pulled the lever back to put it in forward and pushed the lever forward to put it in reverse....just like a car.

Thank you Charlie - the directions are on the lever - forward for forward and back for reverse - just opposite of a car.

My first thought, then it struck me, Which forward ? Lever forward or boat going forward ? I know, look at the shift lever on the trans, unless someone turned it 180 degrees ?
Then I got a headache and had to lie down.

Roger that headache. It is shift forward, go backward, shift backward go forward. Now I've got a headache.
