I was looking to buy a used dingy with a small motor but after looking around you can but a used jet ski cheaper. Has any body done this? Can you tow them behind the boat? Do they tow well?

Thanks

Most jet skis don't tow well because water can easily into the engine.

also they make lousy dingy replacements.

A poor substitute for most

If you're a cruiser, it's a no-brainer- how much can you carry (laundry, groceries, spare parts, etc.) on a jetski compared to a dink? And how much of what you carry won't be ruined if it gets wet?? There's a reason jetskiers wear bathing suits or wetsuits!

Otherwise, it's just transport from anchor or mooring to shore. The jetski won't do it any better, will it?

The jetski is probably too heavy for a davit, too clumsy to tow, and I'm only guessing, but would be more expensive in fuel to tow...

Maybe we should ask all the people towing them what the advantages are.. yeah, I can't find any, either..

Can't carry much on a jet ski

and if you look around and take your time you can find a good dink at a decent price.

Got a used 10.5 zodiac, and a new 3.5 tohatsu for under $1500 I'm very happy with it.

Question....

Bob, what boat do you have?

It's a no brainer

dingys are byfar a better craft for a sailboat owner. Keep looking the deals are out there, in 2006 I bought a 2003 10'2" west marine RIB with a 9.8 Nissan electric start engine, Battery in a battery box, transom mount gastank, jetski trailer, oars, all for $2000. I put a dolfin on the engine and now it really flys with 2 people in it. Try carring 2 cases of beer and groceries from the dock to your boat on a jetski. In rough seas you can always deflate the dingy and store it on deck, the jetski your stuck with alot of dead weight dragging behind you.

and the number one reason not to use a jetski

as a dinghy... Jetskis (PWCs) can't legally run at night. Come back from a late dinner and you'll have to break the law to get home to your boat.
