I just recently purchased a PVC Dinghy..

Whats a good way to attach state registration numbers and stickers...

I have seen Paint, Vinyl numbers, Magic marker, on the tubes and free standing boards and laminated sheets attached to tubes...

Will the state sticker stay on the PVC if I deflate and roll up ?

What is a prefered method to display...

When I used to have inflatables, I used the PVC number boards and tied them off to the lifting ropes. I learned to face them inside after losing a few at the dinghy docks. It's actually easier for the patrol to see them. Plenty of people paint them on using stencils. I used to see a lot of folks put the stickers on the engine lid, although I now believe you can get an adhesive mount to glue on for the sticker if you decide to paint the numbers on. From experience, I don't think you will have any luck with the stick on numbers over time.

Concur with Rick D. I have the same problem. I used the vinyl numbers and have to keep resticking them because they come loose. My state sticker has the same issue. I keep my dinghy rolled up and in the bag. When I take it out have to repress the sticker and number. I too need to find a better solution. Maybe a hanging board is the right solution. But not sure if legal in Ca.

Rick, did harbor patrol or USCGA ever say anything to you about using placards?

I painted my numbers on the boat,, and put the sticker on the transom. Was never questioned from Texas around to Maryland, and all through Bahamas

I'm about to change to pvc board or laminated plastic sheet with the numbers sandwiched between. Originally I used a stencil and magic marker but it bleached out in a couple of months.
The state stickers are on the transom - 1 inside, 1 out - with a piece of clear plastic screwed over it. Hoping if I get stopped I'll get some credit for making an effort, stickers just don't get along with inflatables.

The problem I see is not so much the material but the fact it is not a flat smooth surface like on the hull of the boat. If one could apply a material that would smooth out the dinghy material then there might be some form of success. But what can be used that will maintain in the sunlight and still be flexible enough for when rolling the boat for storage? I was thinking maybe Shoe Goo. I have used that to seal some very minor scuff marks on the bottom of the boat and it smooths out nicely. Think I will try that.

Started out with them painted on with a paint/decal kit but they didn't look good for long that way and I still had to deal with the year/month decals...

... and put them on small rectangular aluminum pieces I hung off the boat just aft of the painted on numbers. You can see the one on the left side above barely....

then when I made the cover I incorporated the numbers and aluminum plaques into the cover...

A place here in Eastport on Severn Ave makes boat graphics. They also make dinghy numbers from a black (vinyl?) that has rip-stop in it, and a sticky back. Included is two squares of the stuff to attach the state numbers to. Mine have been on for 5 or 6 years now. I would think any boat graphics maker could do it?

Not once. As long as they can see them they don't seem to be too picky around here. Especially if you are trying to make their job easier.

I took mine off placed by the PO because my dinghy use does not require it's registration.

I painted the numbers on the rubber hull but put the sticker on the transom. I first tried to paint a square the size of the sticker on the hull and then placed the sticker on the dried paint but that did not work. I do not think any official will question the sticker on the transom. Surely they have better things to do.

My stencil with sharpie lasts at least a year of full time use. The reg sticker seems to stick fine. This is hypalon, not pvc.

I bought the registration plate from boatnumbers.com

Came in a week and went on like a patch...

Seems tight to tube now, will report back in a year or two to report on how it stands up to being rolled up every weekend...
