I just posted a few photos of my home built dinghy, still with a little cosmetic work to go but close to completion. Many of you expressed interest in a few photos so feast your eyes. Her rig is a lugsail, which is like a gaff rig but the luff of the sail is not attached to the mast, The foot and head are laced to the boom and yard respectively. all spars and sail are ready to go but I haven't hoisted them until it warms up and I pull her out of the garage. comments?

PHOTOS?

FEB.1,2001 Hi David, I just tried to raise your photos but could not find them in the photo forum. Could you please double check that they got loaded? The problem could be on my end here in St. Lucia since I'm also having problems loading the home page today as well. I really want to see your dinghy. Thanks , Brian Pickton of Beneteau Owners.net, Aboard the Legend, Rodney Bay, St. Lucia

Post some more photos when you get some paint on... they always look even beter then. What is the length? I've gotta share my boatbuilding project now guys... I've built two small sailboats in the past & I started out to build another little wood row/sail but here's where I'm at after going crazy with the cheeze whiz... http://www.the-stedding.org/~craig/photos/The_Launch -- Craig Coffman craig@the-stedding.org Winds of Change H40.5

Really nice guys.

Both boats are beautiful. And what a great web-site Craig has. I envy both of you your skills and having the time. Mowing grass and wallpapering barely leaves time for sailing or working on the boat around here.

Coast Guard license- RW

I took the Masters 100 gross ton license exam and passed the test. I still have to fill out a lot of forms and then go to the coast guard station in boston to actually apply for the license. the actual license issued will depend on sea time, sea time in various locations, size of vessels the sea time is in, passing a drug test, physical exam, and eye test (color blindness and corrective lenses), having 3 letters of recommendation, a first aid course certificate, and on and on. It was worth taking the course, I learned a lot especially in the navigation portion. I also will receive a license endorsement for towing and another one for sailing. To get the sailing endorsement you need to pass the module but also half your sea time must be on sailboats. As with all such matters your sea time is based on evidence that you owned boats during the times noted and other than that your integrity. Anyone can get a log book and fill it out with a lot of make believe data. they expect you to tell the truth and its in your best interest to comply. the license can be upgraded as you get more time or more time past the boundary. I should end up with a 25 or 50 ton master license for waters inside the boundary of Montauk point to southeast light Block Island to Gay Head Martha's Vineyard to Nantucket, and I should get a six pack endorsement for near coastal waters out to 200 miles. the difference is a six pack license is limited to uninspected vessels carrying no more than 6 passengers. the master license includes inspected vessels and for passengers up to the limit of the vessel within the range specified by the license. thus i could captain a small ferry boat, or tug boat, etc. I don't intend to but who knows where life could lead. my real motivation was to go to Bermuda I will be offshore and any contribution by the crew to the trip makes them paying passengers legally and thus the captain needs the appropriate license to be legal. I recommend you take the course. You can't know enough in this business, thanks for the compliment on the dinghy. dave
