Our tender is an 11'-6" varnished sailing dinghy. I know it is large for a tender, but it rows and tows wonderfully, with the added benefit of being able to sail around anchorages on pleasant days. We do not want an inflatable. When boarding the dinghy, we hang a couple of bumpers to protect the sides of our fiberglass sailboat. This works most of the time. Rather than the bumpers, I would like to find some "salty" chaffing gear for the gunnels of the dinghy that would protect the fiberglass. I have tried numerous resources for ideas but have drawn a blank. Does anyone have any thoughts or sources for suitable chaffing gear for a varnished dinghy?

How About Some 1" Line?

Split some PVC pipe and attach it to the tender then the line to it that should hold it in place real well.

1" line, II

My old hard dinghy has a flange/lip where the hull and liner are joined. It is drilled to match the spiral lay on 1" nylon three-strand twisted line. The line is laced on with small dacron three-strand string. Up through the hole, down along the spiral of the lay and up through the next hole. Work perfectly, looks salty, and is easy to maintain.

rope rub rail bumper

Here is a picture of my d4 dinghy as I was installing 3 strand rope as rub rail bumper. The rope is set with 5200 adhesive into a half round groove cut into the rubrail and is continuous all the way around the boat. There is a splice on the bow at the location of the clamps. It has been a great bumper now for 2 1/2 years and the 5200 has held it in without problem. The splice was made so that the rope was stretched as it fit into the groove. Only down side is that it adds weight.

Keep your varnished dinghy pristine.

All you need to do is thread a Swim Noodle(your color choice ;)) onto your painter. Just flip it to port or starboard on the dinghy as you approach your mothership. Leave the noodle on your painter while towing. It'll keep the dinghy from banging into your big boat.

Terry's D4 photo

Hey Terry, Your photo was not viewable. I am finishing up my PK78 and am very curious to how your railing looks. Can you send it to me direct ... sailr4@yahoo.com Thanks
