I have an idea you might like

I just came back a couple of week ends ago from a Hunter gathering at Langly. One of the H380s had just installed a new system for their WM inflatable and it has some advantageous that I hadn't thought of. You may like the idea as well. The 376 and the 380 enjoy the same hull and have nearly the same transom. The 380 I saw had install Weaver Snap Davits on the stern so that you could come along side the stern in the dinghy, clip on, get on the mother ship and pull the dinghy up like they do on a power boat. It was real easy to raise it, keeps the rain out of the dinghy (I suppose you don't need to worry about that), is somewhat protective of the person at the helm and it apprently keeps diesel fumes from coming into the cockpit. I bought the items (model 150) that I needed from Defender at a reduced price and it was here in days from across the country. The glue I bought locally as it is hazadous material and cost more to ship. They don't advertise a web page although they have one--you'll have to use Google to find it under Weaver Snap Davits. They just moved to Idaho so I'm not sure about their phone numbers--might have a forwarding command. It is 1.800.367.4062. It is also in the West Marine Catalog, however, West Marine does not carry them any more, but you can see how they work from the pictures.

Hey Les

Les, I had been looking at the Weaver Snap Davits a while back. I don't remember why, but I thought they might be an interference. Currently, I use line to tie the ding on the back in a similiar configuration that the Davis' provide. Can you send me a pic of yours? I would be interested in the dimension above the rub rail and the position from centerline. Two things about tying the ding on the back. One, it blocks the stern light if the ding is up. An obvious problem at night. Two, if we are healed hard over the extreme fore or aft of the ding can drag in the water on the leeward side. Thanks in advance, Mike D

Those are good points

Mike, Those are two good points that you make, the lights and the heal of the boat. You've got me on the light. I don't know yet what I'll do, possibly put a light on the radar pole except it's off to one side. Boy, you got me on this one--I didn't think about that at all. I'll call my friend who did this project already and see what he sez..... I suspect he didn't think of it, either. I don't know about the heal as well but my thoughts have been along these lines. Both Terry (my friend) and I have smallish inflatables, he has a West Marine and I a 9ft AVON roll up. Given their sizes, I don't believe a little heal would hurt these boats if they even get near the water. Terry did say the he glued the pads on the inflatable, highers, so that it would ride higher when attached to his boat. At lest my 380 doesn't like to be on a hard heal so we sail mostly upright, but let me think about this problem as well. Hey, where were you when I was planning this project. Shoot, back to the drawing boards, although, I still think I like the whole idea. And yes, I will take pictures and measurements. I just bought my wife a new digital camera that I'm dying to play with. I'll keep this board informed of my project and set backs.

Ocean Marine

Art, It all depends on what you are comfortable with and how much you want to spend. . . We installed a davit system from Ocean Marine Systems (Canada) two years ago on our 376 and have been very happy with the installation. The company, specifically Mike Thomas, was really a pleasure to work with....answered all my questions and the installation was fairly simple for my wife and I to do ourselves. The system is designed to "swing in" to the stern if you are not using it. It is really nice when we are gunkholing to have the dinghy snugged up in the davits with the outboard engine ready to go....just drop it down and get underway. The best part is that I got a quality system at a lower price than I found in U.S. (including the shipping). Ocean Marine has a website at www.vru.com/ocean/ocean/ and an 800 number 800-883-2848. Hope that helps...

Edson Hang on Davits

Has anyone seen/used or knows someone who uses the "J" shaped hooks that attach to rear stanchions to hold a small inflatable?

I saw a boat last summer that had the Edsons - simple way to hang a dink! here's a cheap version -- try the link http://kindred-spirit.net/upgrades/davits.html
