Has anyone equipped their Passage 42 with transom mounted dinghy davits ? If so, could you please describe their design, construction and your degree of satisfaction with the installion. I saw a P-42 in Nantucket the last week in June which had arched davits mounted to the vertical surface of the first step down on the transom. They pivoted parallel to the transom when not in use. Any practical advice would be appreciated. S/V Voyager - Newport, RI

Davits yes, but . . .

John Poindexter's Bluebird uses the kind that are mounted on the deck surface, on either side of the rudder post. These slide out and go in the quarter locker when the dingy is away. He had to use a backing plate and covered it with teak inside the aft cabin. The other method is to use the swing davits like the ones you saw. There is a company in Seattle or Vancouver that sells a kit for the P 42. The problem is that since they attach to the taff rail, the rail needs support. The kit runs cables to the sun deck where you install padeyes. They have goosenecks on the cables. They only need to be attached when the dingy is up, but i think it presents a problem. I have a picture of what it looks like if you want to email me. I will email it back. I forgot the name of the company, but we can find that out easy. Phil H will know. The kit was less than $1,000.

P42 Davits

I saw two companies, Kato Marine and another, who had davits adaptable to the 42. I decided not to buy because one needed to drill way too many holes to mount correctly including all the bracing, which Brad referenced. I'm thinking of adding a second arch which willmount all of my antennas and serve as davits. The arch is mounted about in the middle of the rails at the sides of the stern. The rails are cut and welded to the new arch. Of course if you don't like arches ...
