Dinghy Chaps

Started out with building a cover for my aging dinghy and ended up making chaps. All materials are recycled . The mesh is from our trampoline surround enclosure. The blue stuff is discharge hose filled with sand. I think the mesh will block some of the sun but obviously not a lot of it. I have the Sunbrella to make a full set but I believe the dinghy is at the end of its service life and didn’t want to burn through the material. I think it turned out well and was a great learning opportunity. It adds about 10 pounds to it all. The
Dinghy lives on my davits so it stays upright and they should stay put.

Nice work. Perhaps you'll get another year or two out of the dinghy.

I see you splurged for the Sailrite hot knife.

No. Amazon special but I do have a Sailrite LZ1. It amazes me with its capabilities. It went through the hose like butter.

Looks good! You can come and sew for my boat any time.
Yea, anytime I projects like this I consider how to make money. I think I would would made about 1.50 a hour on this. My stitching is 10ft away quality still. The mesh material and how I anchored them on the inside complicated it by about double.

Yeah, you can go get a job, make money, and pay someone, but then you lose the personal satisfaction and sense of accomplishment. That's priceless.

Besides, you get all that practice ripping out seams. Here's one of my sewing projects.

Must be a lot of mosquitoes where you live if you've got to make a mosquito net for your inflatable. lol

It is not the number but the size... And then there is the messy clean up as they puncture the dinghy and blow up like a balloon.

Dammm Mildred I thought that was his thigh.. Oh well... Poof..splatter.

Nice job Honcho.

Another option is inflatable paint. It blocks >98% of UV (yes, I've tested it). Less weight and no extra flapping around. Lasts 5 years or so.

The only place I've had wear that the chaps would cover is where is rubs on the davits; a couple wear patches solves that.

Tough to justify the sewing machine with paint ;)
