Anyone know who makes a digital inclinometer? I know they're available but can't find a manufacturer or retailer.

I call them digital levels and they are available in better building suppy stores.

I have never seen a digital version of this gauge. I have a Reiker's made in phila. Why go digital? It will just require power and then fail. A simple Reiker's gauge uses free energy...gravity.

I agree with Tim R. Not only are the simple gauges cheap and foolproof, they are far more easily read at a glance than a numerical display. It is almost the only reasonably priced thing on a boat, don't let it go the way of the rest of the instrumentation.

google "digital inclinometers"......

you will get lots of hits... here's one site that sells to the physical therapy - rehab industry. Applications in all types of engineering and aviation, too. Very interesting.... but...... I can't imagine needing one on a small sailboat. Racing, maybe?

A plumb bob on a string and a protractor will serve.

Any bottle of beer or wine or whatever will act as an incline meter or heel-o-meter.
Your eyes work pretty well as that as well. Once water is coming over the rail you are getting closer to 45 degrees of heel. Bottles slide across smooth surfaces above 10 deg., cans at about 15, people start to move above 20 etc. Water all around means 90+ degrees of heel.
It is your money and your life so buy all the digital equipment you want.
I think it is less about the absolute angle of heeling but the feeling the boat gives you that is important.
Good luck.

I just use Nancy for my indicator. An oh sh*t is 15 degrees, Oh hell is about 20 degrees. After that it is duck and cover.

I just listen for the sound of all the stuff in the cabin sliding into the cabin sole.
But seriously, why not get a compass with a built in tiltometer? I have a Plastimo mini contest that I am very happy with. I can predict the swear words and prevent the crashing sounds... if I choose to:laugh: Tim

"Oh s**t" Inclinometer

Ross, we made small "Oh S**t!" labels for port and starboard of our inclinometer, just for grins. Has provoked plenty of informed (and uninformed) conversation through the years.

Thats my wife's name for it. It has very similar settings to Ross's wife.
My sweet Nancy wants to let all of the other wives know that she is pleased to be assured that she isn't alone in her love for the boat and her discomfort when it threatens to dump her into the bay. ;D

Its hard to beat an air bubble in a curved glass tube

filled with liquid. If mounted properly you will get a true reading at all times with minimum lag time. Installations and replacement are very simple and rather inexpensive. The air bubble gauge does not need any calibration. The thruth of the matter is that I very rarely look at it anymore perhaps just to confirm what my senses are telling me. Yeah, things bang around the cabin and the wife screams but that is par for the course.

So I would say that unless you have a specific need to know the exact degrees of inclination (to meet calculations in passing a low bridge or skipping over a sand bar) I would save the money and invest in another project.

Re: Its hard to beat an air bubble in a curved glass tube

Things banging around below means that they weren't properly stowed and a screaming wife indicates an insensitive husband.

Not 'insensitive'...

...if you interpret the last sentence in the first paragraph differently, or does this nudge close to 'TMI'?

How about Free (If you have an iPhone or iPod touch)

There is a free level you can download. It looks like a bubble level but has a degree readout also. It even has sound which changes tone the closer to level you are.

Just place your favorite multi-tool on the cabin top. You'll be heeled to port when you hear the splash off to the left... :):):)

Why does everything today need to be digital?

Or needs to beep for that matter....

Anyhow, here's something relatively cheap from Harbor Freight:
Digital Angle Gauge

Usual disclaimer: I have no business interest in Harbor Freight. They just take MY money.
