Hi All, Are there any major differences between a 1999 model 170 and the newer ones? Thanks, Jim R.

Differences that I am aware of

There appear to be a few minor differences between past and current model 170s. As I understand, the hull is identical. This is a great question and one that I would love to see Hunter address for the benefit of owners of older models. This list is probably not complete, but it is a start. As for the differences that I am aware of (possibly not all of 1999, but of past models): 1. Most significantly is the addition of factory reefing for the main. This includes reefing grommets in the sails and the associated cleats and cheek block on the mast and boom. 2. Cup holders...I have never seen these, but the archives makes reference to cup holders and that they leaked like a month old puppy! Not on the new models. 3. Addition of a centerboard locking strap. This strap (actually a bungee about a foot long) snaps to an eye-strap just in front (about 2" or so) of the main sheet block on the floor on the hull. The other end of the bungee snaps to the bail on the top end of the centerboard, near where the pulley is affixed (one of the pulleys which is used to raise the centerboard). I have seen reference to weighted centerboards also, but am unsure if this was an option or standard. Anybody??? This may not be a complete list, but may get you started. The boat is really the same boat with niceties added and bad ideas eliminated. If it is important, I would recommend that you visit a local Hunter dealer and check out the new boats and see for yourself. One of these days I would to like post a query of all the changes that owners have incorporated in their boats, and see pictures. I have made quite a few, mostly minor, but as I see something that I don't like, I fix it. I guess that I like to tinker...the local West Marine store employees loves to see me enter!!! Good luck and am looking forward to others posts.

Centerboard is heavier

The newer centerboards are heavier. You'll see comments from owners of older 170's that suggest that the boat is unstable. Perhaps because of this, Hunter increased the weight of the centerboard starting, I believe, with last year's model. Mine is a 2002 with the heavier centerboard, so I never sailed an older one but I have no problems with the stability of the boat.
