We are considering the purchase of an '87 model C-22. I want to race. I understand the older models are more competitive. Why? What year did the change take place? And does it really make a difference in performance? Thanks!

I can't answer your question on the 22' but I heard the same about the 27'. As I understand it the older 27's were a faster boat because the earlier models didn't have the extra's like a diesel engine, 20 gallons of fuel, 20 gallons of fresh water, 15 gallons of waste water, hot water tank and a bunch of extras that added weight. I don't know if it's the same story or not with the 22'. Maybe someone else will chime in about the 22'and give you better info but if someone doesn't this might give you an idea. Good luck with the 22', I see people having a ball on em! Jack

The 1986 model is when the C22 changed. The interior is different and there are also cockpit changes including batery and gas storage locations. The newer C22s have a more modern look and, in my opinion, are a better layout with a fixed sink instead of the slide out. The hull is exactly the same, hence they still are in the same race class. I think that the older models may be lighter. Racers get very finicky and do things like avoid the poptops due to extra weight. If you are primarily a racer and a 1/2 knot is like the world to you then you will want to think about which keel to have and much more. If you are a regular sailor go for the '87.

Older C22's

The older C 22's vintage 1970's were lighter, and the one of choice was with a swing keel. As I understand it is due to construction. The hulls are the same, but there is less material in the old ones.
