Difference between an H31 Legend and a 31 Cherubini

I've tried using the Search feature for this answer, but have been unsuccessful. We are looking at a 1983 Hunter 31, which is being billed as a "Legend". I know that there are also Cherubini-designed models of the H31. To further my confusion, I have seen in several places the notation "H31_83-87". I suspect the latter is to differentiate between Cherubini models and non-Cherubini models, possibly by year of manufacture.

Can someone explain the differences, how to tell them apart? (Perhaps it is as simple as year of manufacture, hence the notation.)

Was 1983 a year that both types were made?

Not a great reference on this one but my memory is that there was no Cherubini 31 sold by Hunter. The Hunter31 is sometimes called a "Legend" and was produced from '83 - '87. It was designed by Cortland Steck and was part of a "family" that included the Hunter (Legend) 34 and 40.

The Hunter Cherubini's are the 25, 27, 30, 33, 36, 37.. I think the 37 was the only one to continue in production past 1983.

There were two different 31's built by Hunter: the one in the early 80's and another in early 2000's.

I don't believe either of them should have the "Legend" label, as the Legends were built in the late 80's to mid-90's. It seems that people arbitrarily add "Legend" and ".5" to many Hunter models. :) The Legend designation doesn't really mean anything; it was simply a naming convention Hunter used in that one time period.

Neither of the 31's were Cherubini designs.

Did Hunter make a 30 and a 31 in 1983? I seem to recall reading in another thread that there was some overlap, and it occurred in 1983.

I guess I need to find the hull number on this boat to make sure I know what I'm buying. Is the HIN on the starboard side of the transom, on the outside of the boat, or is it elsewhere?

I am the proud owner of a 1985 Hunter 31. I still have the original Hunter color sales brochure and nowhere is the name "Legend" used. I agree with Phil, in that the Legend
series Hunters did not arrive until the latter 1980s.

I was once told (I think) that American Hunter called their boats Legends in Europe because there is/was a Hunter sailboat builder in the U.K. In deed

and this is where a lot of confusion arose

H31 by Cherubini

As can be seen by the drawings, this is a very early 'sled' type, the better to accommodate the large quarter berth (which is the REAL reason for the sled shape making its way to cruising boats; there no other reason).

As you have learned, there was no Hunter 31 by Cherubini. The H30 was last built in 1982, I think. The only one whose production survived my dad himself was the H27, which was last built in 1984.
