Diesel Smell in bilge

My recently purchased 1993 33.5 Hunter seems to always have a diesel fume smell in the main cabin dispite cleaning the bilge several times. No apparent leak can be seen from the fuel tank. One item I noticed is the engine compartment does not have any really good means of powered ventilation. Supply air appears to come to the motor from under the stern bunk around the rudder post and battery compartment. I would like to build some form of powered ventilation as the boat sits buttoned up most of the time. Any ideas would be welcome at this point. STEVE White

Sources of diesel smell

I suspect you have a leak somewhere in the fuel line, most probably around a joint. Note that you must replace the copper gaskets each time you tighten or they will weep. Good luck on your new 33.5! Dan Aquila '92 33.5

filter?

After the engine has been running take a paper towel and blot areas you think might be leaking. Start with the engine fuel filter at the bleed screw. That is where mine leaks. Then it goes down the filter, line to the fuel pump and into the pan under the motor. A couple of drops and it stinks.
