Diesel smell in aft cabin/engine ventilation

After motoring for a while, the aft cabin will smell of diesel. I went over the engine (Yanmar 3GM in a Hunter 340 - 2000 model) and fixed all small leaks, made sure the exhaust was double clamped and all bends were smooth. The engine works great. Still get the smell. Is there a way to create a positive ventilation system in the boat? You know, ram air for the diesel! Bring in fresh air, help cool the engine compartment, so the boat does not get so hot, then vacumn it back out. Maybe use inline blowers and 3 inch vent hose. Anybody every do this?

My Thoughts Exactly !

I have a Hunter 34 and have thought the same thing. If you could just create a negative pressure in the engine compartment most of the smell of the diesel would go overboard. Obviously the problem is creating this negative pressure and where to vent it ? Any thoughts ?

Basically that is what they do on gas engines.

Brian: Basically that is want they do on gasoline engines. They usually have an intake and exhaust hose. Before you start a gasoline engine you are suppose to run the blower for several minutes to clear any gasoline fumes that may have accumulated in the sumps and bilges. Seems to me that if you could just draw air out of the engine compartment, fresh air would come in from the normal sources that feed fresh air to the engine. They only problem I see is the room required for a blower and the hose!

Use Bio Diesel to reduce Diesel Smell

We had the same problem in our 310, and it really bothered my wife and kids. This year we added Bio Diesel to our fuel tank and it eliminated the smell. We added several gallons of Bio Diesel to the tank, which left us with a blend of 20% Bio Diesel and 80% regular diesel fuel. Now after we run the engine and enter the cabin you do not smell any diesel fumes at all, even after running the motor for an extended time. The research we did on this issue said not to exceed the 20% level of Bio Diesel. We would encourage you to try this as it would be an easy solution to your problem. As an added benefit the engine will run cleaner and smoke less.

100% Biodiesel is okay.

Kevin: You can run 100% biodiesel if you think it is worth it. The only real down side is the fact that it can cause some problems with some fuel hoses and is a little expensive in very high concentrations. If you replace the fuel hose, that problem will cease to exist. If you want to do some more research on this subject you can find it on the following website www.cytoculture.com Randall has some other reasearch papers on the site to at http://cytoculture.com/Bdiesel.html I too am a believer in this stuff. Randall von Wedel runs his Mercedes Diesel wagon at 100% biodiesel.

Biodiesel vs ventilation

I will look for the biodiesel and add some as soon as possible. However, Galveston bay in July and August is barely fit for man nor beast. The temp on the outside of the boat during our short 3 day cruise last weekend reached 113 degrees! With wind on the nose in the channel we motored nearly 4 hours to Galveston. Even though we docked and had power for the AC. It took a long time to really cool the boat. I can't help but believe a little postive ventilation would help. Inline blowers and hose are fairly inexpensive, were to put them is the problem. I will be looking at it hard next weekend. I'll let you know what I come up with!

Archives can help ...

There have been a couple of articles submitted on "How To" install an engine vent arrangement. Although I believe the article was for a h376, the concept may be the same Jeff

3" lower is the way to go.

I had a smilar problem on my Hunter 410, and installed a blower to run while the engine is running and it works great. No smell at all.

To Ty...

Ty, The electrical panel for our 410 has a Blower breaker. But no blower. Where did you install yours? How is it vented? We too have the smell. John Richard s/v Jack's Place

Great photos! Great Idea!

My only possible concern would be backwash if you get "pooped" by a big wave. Does the screen/vent prevent backwash?
