Does anybody know the opitmum RPMs for the fastest cruising speed with the idiot lights instead of a temp gage? It's hard to tell how hot the engine is running. It seems the best range is 2200 to 2600 RPMs. Does anybody have any info or comments?

you did not say what engine you have but most will cruise at 75%to80% of the max operating rpm. 2600 sounds slow you should be able to get closer 2800 to 2900 assuming that you have a yanmar that peaks out at 3600. It should get you to your appx hull speed.

Best Bet? - Check manual

I would bet that you have a 3GM30F. Go to the link below and poke around. You'll find the specs for your engine.

steam

you'll usually see steam in the exhaust when an engine's running too hot. a temp gauge, however, is a really good investment. I never back my boat out of the slip until the temp gauge tells me the engine's ready.

376 Engine RPM

I have a 96 376. I installed a temp guage when the boat was new. I run about 3000-3200 rpm. The boat moves near hull speed and is nice and smooth at that rpm. Every once in a while I will run a few minutes at 3500 to blow out any carbon and I only notice a slight increase in engine temp.
