Do the catalinas tend to have problems with diesel fumes in the cabins or outside areas of the boat?

Guts althought you were not Catalina specific in your question I can offer the following based upon my experience with my own Catalinas and sailing on many others and other brands.... After owning a 1988 C27 for many years with an inboard diesel and now a C34 MKII I have not experianced diesel fumes in or around the boat. Yes, there could be a slight hint of diesel in the engine compartment while the engine is running and for a short time after shutdown but you would really have to be looking, "smelling" for it. Sooo, to answer your quetion.. No Catalina's do not have a problem with diesel fumes. Other modern day boats should not have a problem either assuming all functions are operating normally. Enjoy!

Fumes
It depends on your engine. In my case, I had a Universal 25XP on a 1981 C30. This is actually a Kubuta tractor engine that has been converted from field use to marine use. While out in the fields the breather tube venting is not a problem as it vents out into the field. On the older catalinas they vented the breather hose to the bilge. The solution is simple - route the hose from the bilge to the intake. I made a bracket to hold the hose near the intake and stuck the end into the foam. End result of this simple and quick fix is no diesel smell.

If you have funes, you have a problem. This can kill you. Things to check: Mixing elbow; Exhaust; Don't anchor from the stern with the motor running. Fair winds. Paul

You should not have fumes in the cabin, I don't have any in my C320. If you do, check for a leak somewhere.
