Anyone have ideas on how to get diesel fuel odors out of the cabin? I cleaned the bilge. It seemed to start a year ago when I layed the boat up for the winter and put in too much diesel fuel..overflow out the back okay but ever since, it seems to have a lingering odor.

"Cleaned" the bilge...

Describe what you did to clean it. 'Cuz if you only did what most people consider "cleaning the bilge" (i.e. threw in some bilge cleaner and/or bleach...let it slosh around a while, and then pumped it out), it wasn't enough.

in addition

In addition to Peggies reply, I would also check the fill and the vent hoses on the fuel tank. You may have a crack which may be causing fuel vapor into the boat. Also be sure to check the fuel tank. Also in addition you should consider cleaning the engine (Gunk) and recleaning the bilge, this should take care of the problem.

Not Just the Bilge....

But throughout the Aft cabin.... It seems the strongest "diesel" odor is in the cushions. I have taken the covers off, and washed, but would like to know what the trick is for the foam. This is our first season with the boat, and looking forward to it going in the water this week. Paul s/v "The Regina Avery"

Another thought

This might sound obvious, but diesel is one of thpse fluids that seems to find a way to seep. I have had fittings and filters that otherwise seemed tight seep fuel, especially around fuel filters. Could find no drips, just slightly wet threads, and of course odor. Check all connections carefully. Suspect any that look even slightly wet.

Attention BP (re: cushions)

My foam inserts are wrapped in light plastic, like the kind you get from the dry-cleaners. Keeps oders from getting to, or comming from foam.
