Can anyone explain the difference between home heating fuel and diesel fuel I use in my sailboat? I've been told they are about one in the same. If that's the case, can I use my left over fuel in my boat to heat my home? Any informed info. or advice appreciated, thanks.

They are for all purposes identical.

The government has stricter requirements for the levels of sulfer in motor fuel than for home heating and they require that motor fuel be dyed a different color than heating oil. That is the fundamental method for identifing them. Burn your waste motor fuel for heat it can't hurt anything.

Ross...not trying to pick...

...however the home heating oil and off road fuel is dyed red. The fuel for the road is not. As far as I know the feds don't care if the dyed fuel is in a boat because there are no road use taxes on a non-highway used vehicle. If I am wrong someone please 'slain' it to me. Thanks Jack Hart

I think that highway motor fuel is dyed yellow

The EPA seems the be concerned about this. Home heating oil appears to cost about the same a motor fuel inspite of the taxes on motor fuel.

IT's OK

Yes you can use it in your home heat, once ran low on fuel oil at house and went to a truck stop for diesel fuel and added maybe 10 gallon's until could get a regular delivery. Nick

Ross...

...you said, "Home heating oil appears to cost about the same a motor fuel inspite of the taxes on motor fuel." It cost as much because the oil companies know you don't have a choice and charge what they want to. The fuel taxes in NC were 34 cents last time I looked, you would think the home heating oil would be 34 cents cheaper, nope, pretty close to the same! Jack PS, the highway fuel is not dyed. The rest is dyed red.

I've been burning #2 heating oil in my Mercedes and my boat for over 15 years. There is no difference(except the dye). Right now the national average for diesel is $3.09 and I bought this years supply of #2 oil at $2.27 back in mid summer. There is absolutely no harm to burn the remainder of your diesel fuel in your home heating plant. Don't forget to seal up the vent on your fuel tank after you empty it to prevent moisture build up.

Ross and Alan...

...Ross, I stand corrected, according to what you linked us to, you cannot use dyed fuel in a boat. Alan, if they were to catch you in the Mercedes with dyed fuel...see the fine list Ross linked us too. Thanks Ross for sending that. Jack

What

Are you sure I think the marina diesel is the one that is dyed red. I don't use marina diesel in my boat much,I get it from the truck stops filter twice before using in my boat and it's not red. Nick

I am finding that this...

...is not as simple as I thought. IL according to what I read expressly prohibits dyed fuel in pleasure boats. VA will refund the VA fuel tax paid for pleasure boats. ID appears to prohibit dyed fuel in pleasure boats. I will study it more and post results in a new thread. Jack

Dye in fuel

Around here farmers have dyed fuel for their farm machinery, tractors, etc. It is non-taxed and therefore dyed and to be used off-road (no taxes to pay for roads, bridges, etc). Some farm neighbors have diesel cars and trucks and use their diesel farm storage tanks to refuel their highway vehicles. Noone ever checks the dyed or not dyed contents of a highway fuel tank.

I would wonder if

anyone, anywhere, has ever had their boat stopped, and the color of their diesel fuel assessed, but any competent authority? Hard to imagine....

I think that commercial transport is the

concern about fuel taxes. We don't consume enough to make a difference with our sailboats and local cars and trucks. The big power boats and highway trucks burn gallons per hour so dodging the taxes on that fuel will be significant.

In California, Marine Fuel is RED DYE...

..at auto/truck stations it is clear/yellow. It looks like different states will use the dye to either imply there is a tax or not a tax. abe

Florida Red Marine Fuel

Diesel fuel at marinas here in Florida is dyed red and no tax is collected. When we go to the Bahamas the fuel is not dyed. If I go to the truck stop and buy jerry can diesel it is not dyed, I do pay road tax on that fuel. No one cares what color your marine diesel fuel is. They do care if your car/truck fuel is red! Truck fuel checked @ inspections

One of the things they do when they're checking truckers at weigh stations etc is to look at the fuel color to make sure road taxes have been collected.

As I was researching this...

...I found as stated before that in IL you cannot have dyed fuel in a pleasure craft...NO EXEPTIONS! ID seemed to be the same way. As I noted before, when I get some time I inntend to look at it harder. My assuption was since there was no highway use that boats didn't matter, however a little research found at least two states which ban dyed fuel in pleasure craft. Jack

The reason some states might object

for the running of non dyed fuel in boats is to prevent dye dilution in fuel that may find its way back to the road. The distribution system for diesel is a little cleaner than for fuel oil other than that there is not much difference. I don't bother myself with trying to save money in purchasing diesel fuel as I use no more than 30 gallons a year. Not going out of my way to save $25.
