I am a new owner of an '87 Cat 30. Never had an inboard before! Any thoughts on putting auto-grade diesel fuel, as opposed to marine-grade, into the engine's tank?? Is there any difference? My engine is a Universal. Thanks.

Diesel

I think the only general difference between the auto diesel and marine diesel is the price and color. It's dye colored so the government money hungry types can fine you if they catch you with marine diesel in your car (since with marine diesel, you didn't pay the highway use tax per gallon). I've run both types in my 1987 C30 (M25 Universal), and it seems fine either way.

Additives and Bio blockers are different.

Died diesel (red colored) is used in off road equipment and the color means its price did not include road use taxes. Otherwise diesel is diesel. The main improvements venders usually add to marine diesel are additives and extenders to prevent algae and other small itty-bitty critters and keep the fuel fresh. You can and should add both of these additives to your own fuel unless you motor alot and keep your fuel always fairly new. The main reason to buy and carry your own fuel to your boat are probably price centered and if you add your own goodies to it then it pays off in a monetary way. Just don't spill it all over the marina when pouring it into your tank. Ray
