I have been smelling diesel fuel for some time while sleeping in the quarterberth. Finally nailed down where it was coming from after climbing down into the starboard lazarette. I noticed small pooling of fuel on top of the fuel tank and some on the floor of the lazarette. The top of the tank looked funny and after trying to wipe it up, I noticed the PO placed a absorbing pad on top which was soaked black which I quickly removed to the garbage. I replaced the pad with a new white one to see if it will give me some indication where the leak is coming from while underway. I assume it is leaking while being pumped. I will turn into a midget and tighten all clamps soon :). Does anyone have some other thoughts or similar experiences which might help me? Greg W. SlipAway

fuel gauge?

i had the the same problem and found that the fuel level gauge that was screwed to the top of the tank was leaking when i COMPLETLY filled the tank. after the level went down i removed the guage, made a new gasket and resealed it and haven't had a problem since

After a mechanic replaced the fuel-level sending unit, he forgot to tighten down the six small bolts that keep it attached to the top of the tank. Diesel flew out and into the "ghost" bilge that Hunter inexplicably built on 29.5s between the holding tank and fuel tank. I got kitty litter into it and managed to vaccum that out using an extended wand off a shop-vac. Then I poured baking soda down the bilge and added vineger. Then I vacumed that out. Problem solved. Ah the mysteries of sailing.
