Diesel Fuel in a Gas Can?

Actually it's the other way around. I had a brand new (never been used) empty six gallon gerry can in my car when I ran out of gas (don't tell my wife). I walked to the nearest gas station, put three gallons in it, walked back to the car, put it in and everything was fine. Question; If I thoroughly wash out the can can I still use it for diesel? Maybe a dumb queastion but I want to be sure. Thanks.

Seriously doubt that it would make much difference

Joe: I would not think about telling her. I seriously doubt that it would make any difference. If you put diesel in this tank there would be so little gas fumes that it should make little if any difference. I am not a chemist but I would think that in a plastic container the diesel is going to display any gasoline fumes as you fill the tank. Why don't you ask your admiral what she thinks?

diesal in gas

The biggest difference in diesal and gas is that gas is treated to prevent premature detonation. A little diesal in your gas might cause your gas engine to run rough(pinging) a lot could destroy the engine. A little gas in your diesal engine might cause a small loss of performance. I guess a lot of gas in your diesal might stop it from running. If you are talking less than a cup in six gallons I'd bet you couldn't tell the difference. For the record diesal is a longer chain aliphatic hydrocarbon(10-14 Cs) whereas gasoline is shorter chained(6-8 Cs) with aromatic hydrocarbons to increase the octane. Other stuff is also used to raise the octane. Octane is a measure of the resistance to spontaneous combustion under pressure. Ideally gasoline only detonates when the spark plug fires and diesal detonates at a certain pressure.

Of course

Joe You said: "If I thoroughly wash out the can can I still use it for diesel?" Sure you can, if you do that. Make sure it's all dried out inside, because water in diesel is worse than gas! What color is the can?. Red for gas, yellow for diesel.

No damage / difference

Truckers used to put a few gallons of gas in with the diesel to keep from geling in cold wheather to no ill effect. The little in the can, can't do any damage.

Gasoline in a diesel tank

If there is no visible liquid in the can, whatever gasoline residue that may remain will be so diluted in 5 or 6 gallons of diesel fuel that it will be insignificant.

Gasoline Recommended As Anti-gel

I owned a VW Rabbit Diesel and a VW Jetta diesel and both had recommendations in the owners manual to use up to 25% kerosene or gasoline to keep the fuel from gelling. There is no chance that the little bit of remaining gasoline will have any effect.
