Diesel Exhaust Fan

I hate the noise the diesel exahust fan makes when I am motoring. Motor noise is bad enough but the fan is crazy loud taking away from the quiet enjoyment we sailors live for.

Has anyone disabled this fan? If so are there negative consequences? It is located in the starboard aft storage compartment.

Looking for input. Thanks

Mike,
I have the same sailboat, and also thought about disconnecting the blowers, the problem would be starving the diesel with all the fresh air it uses and resulting in a too rich of a a fuel mixture. That was the response I got from fellow boaters.

Is this an older boat? If it is, perhaps the blower is beginning to wear out and becoming noisier (Bearing noise). I'd suggest installing a new blower and mounting it on rubber isolation mounts to absorb some of the vibration.

The blower runs constantly for purposes of providing airflow to the diesel, and it also helps a tiny little bit to keep the engine compartment from getting overly warm. It wouldn't be a good idea to disconnect it in my opinion.

I can't really hear the blower on my boat, but I am aware that it is running.

Mike, I would not disconnect it. It does a number of things, such as, sucking all the engine fumes out directly out of the boat rather than leaking into the cabin - in addition to what is mentioned above. My old boat didn't have this and the whole cabin smelled like an engine room. I can hear my fan at low engine speeds, but other noises drown it out about about 2,000 RPM or more. You might look into replacing it - it may be defective. That's my two cents worth.
