Diesel Engine Problem

My MD 22 L Volvo diesel is acting up. Runs fine up to about 1500 but thereafter more throttle does nothing for between 5 seconds to one+ minutes then the engine, usually, but not always, comes up to full power. If it comes up to full power it will run all day until you throttle down where it starts all over. If you throttle down to about 1700 it drops to 1500 then won't rev up again without the wait. I replaced both filters with no change in behavior. There does not appear to be any air in the lines. Any help would be appreciated. I'm considering the fuel pump or injection pump but don't want to just replace parts without any idea of what is going on. If anyone has had a similar symptoms/experience I would sure like to know.

maybe

Just a guess, but from your description it sounds like the fuel isn't getting into the cylinder properly, but once it does, it's ok. Since you've looked into the filtter and fuel pump already, that would seem to indicate a problem with one or more of the injectors being clogged. Finicky little things. $$$. Sorry.

clog

Have you ever been in a car when you step on the gas and it jitters than takes off and runs fine, the injector is not working correctly and the low flow at first really does not have the pressure to push it into the engine thus the jitter but once there is more rpm and more pressure bulding up pushing into the engine it will runs fine. Seems you have some sort of clog.

Try Deisel Purge by lubro moly

Sounds like air in line or more likely given Volvo is self bleeding, a clogged injector. Lubro Moly (google it for where to get) deisel purge is fanatastic for cleaning injectors in situ. You could also be pulling air into the system through a filter not seated down or a hose or pipe with a pin hole. Try bleeding the injector by slightly opening the steel fuel pipe that runs from the injection pump to the injector. Note that this is under extremly high pressure but low volume. All the usual caveats about smoling, safety glasses, lawyers etc apply. If you have air it should be evident but the sputtering sound when you bleed it and the decrease or dissapearance of symptoms. No connection with Lunro Moly other than being very happy with all their products for many years as a mechanic.

Diesel Problem

Your problem is not fuel. The RPM's would never come up if it was. You can rule out the injectors and the pump. My guess is you have a sticky govenor spring. Get a oil cleaning additive, run it, and then change the oil. You may have to do it twice. DON'T add kerosene to the oil. The fumes could cause pre-ignition in the crank case and believe me, you won't like that.

Going to the Doctor

I've stumped my local diesel mechanics so its off to Seattle to see the Volvo dealer. The service manager is thinking along the same lines as Ken. In any event the pump will be pulled (with "special" tools) and sent in to be tested. I'll post the results of the test. $$$$$$$$$$

Bad Fuel

Rob, Not knowing your entire situation, I want to bet that somewhere along your travels you received some gasoline vs. diesel. I won't get into pre-igniting details, but do yourself a favour, pollish the fuel, spin new filters and clean your injectors. Do everything everyone else has advised in this forum re;Diesel Engine Problem, they have all provided great info and possible solutions. You see, the gasoline will sit above the diesel and only act up when agitated (Alot Like Me!!) Good Luck, RL
